Having umpired for many years, it is easy to sit on the bench and second-guess the umpire. Get in the right position, keep eyes on the ball and seldom get it wrong. If you try to watch the runner and fielder you are simply guessing and MAY get it right.

Especially after 19 innings umping into the wee hours of the morning. Baseball should be ashamed they haven't moved into the 21st century yet.

 

Not many games go that long. Baseball remains one of the best games going. So few actually know the rules, and hence the controversies. Coaches argue with unpires for time: it gives their players time to think about what they have done wrong.

I remember making a wrong strike three call against a batter, when the pitcher had an amazing rise ball. I called a strike too soon. I had to live with that call, but I didn't change it.....

I'm sure you were a good one. But no one thinks that balls and strikes will be part of replay. They already use it to some extent for some home runs.

The Little league world series uses some form of replay... The problem is Bud Selig who doesn't like it or want it. Personally, I feel the same way about him. :laugh:

 

I only did minor ball. We only had 8 umpires and did 3 counties, and we took it seriously. I worked over 200 games each season, between baseball and softball.

The thing about umpiring is to make yourself disappear and leave the game to the players. Umpires who stick out don't last long.

I only ejected players for poor sportsmanship and not the names they gave me when I wasn't looking.

I think professional ball has become that; professional ball, and it has missed the game.

He was safe!

He was safe cause the ump made the call and that's the end of it.

It wasn't that long ago that an ump called one of our players out though the video showed otherwise. It wasn't quite as blatant as this one, but the Braves took a loss because of it.

Life goes on. Is it really going to make a difference in deciding the who goes to the WS? I doubt it.

 

Last year it did away with a perfect game. This game knocked the Pirates from 1st to 3rd.

Isn't the idea to get the call right?

 

I hear people argue for it occasionally.

And yet, they still miss it, just like IR isn't fool-proof in basketball or football.

I'm not anti-IR per se, but the myth of the perfectly called game is just that.

What mystifies me is how the Braves are so lucky.

As far as the Pirates going to third, they're probably only a game or so out. This may test this young team's mettle. This may be like last years Reds-Cards brawl. It may solidify this team and give them something to rally around.

The Reds continue to do their best to take themselves out of the pennant race just in time for me to worry solely on football

 

At first glance, it's an obvious out. Like Jim, I use to umpire a lot of games and bad calls are made every once in a while. Remember, nobody remembers to the correct calls, just the wrong or controversial ones.

In watching the play from different angles, I could see where the catcher did not tag the runner. He was doing a sweep tag and I could see where the catcher could have missed the tag. Hind sight is always 20/20.

The umpire was interviewed concerning the call and he said he thought the catcher missed the tag. In watching the replay from different angles, he said there was one angle which clearly showed the catcher tagging the runner on the pants leg. The manager of the Pirates came out the next night and showed real class by shaking that umpire's hand.

Just remember Pirate fans, this is one game out of 162. Hopefully the Reds will get hot and win the division.

 

In most of these so-called bad calls, angle is the main thing. A camera view can show many angles, but an umpire has but one angle. Experience and training helps determine the umpires angle. Sometimes he has no choice. He calls what he sees, and stands by it.

Yep, a 90 degree view is usually better than a 45 degree view of a play. And the replay cameras get the added benefit of aerial view, which is why baseball needs to use replay more.

 

Personally, I think replays will detract from the game, as they do in football and even hockey.

I actually think hockey is the only sport that uses replay well. Football is a mess. Basketball isn't great. IR in baseball misses HRs.
