Does your church do any special services for Thanksgiving?

We have our Thanksgiving Eve service tonight at the two campuses that have buildings. Our campus meets in a hotel so we join with the closest other campus for tonight.

Just wondering what other people do. :)

The church we left last May would have a church-wide Thanksgiving potluck the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving. The church bought the turkeys and a ham. The church is about 75 people and most would come for that potluck, and bring guests. It would take some creative thinking and dedicated staff to do that with a larger church, I think.

The church we have been attending since May has a special service of praise the Sunday evening prior to Thanksgiving followed by a dessert social. The church provides the ice cream and the folks bring other desserts. The service itself is a mix of prayers of thanks, reading of Scripture, singing, and special music.

We close Wednesday night services that week and have a Tuesday night Gumbo supper together.

We :
  • eat wonderful gumbo and there is the biggest variety of cornbread ever seen
  • the pastor brings a message of thanksgiving - last night it was all about gratitude to God for His mercy and care
  • we participate in the Lord's Supper
  • we collect a special offering for the benevolence fund

My church ( www.lighthouseministries.org ) held her annual "Church Family Thanksgiving" meal this past Sun nite (11/18). The meal was free, courtesy of our Youth & Student Ministry, donations were accepted, w/anything over the total amt they had to pay for the meal (Turkey, ham, & ALL the works! from a local caterer!), going to fund a "scholarship fund" for our youth who can't afford to pay out of their own funds for their annual discipleship retreat at beautiful Gatlinburg, TN [high atop the TN portion of the Smoky Mntns! ;-)].
