Which is more humane - shooting them or leaving them to starve?

    Ken,

The owners were responsible for raising them in a hurricane zone ... so, we gonna hang the owners?

This is a tragedy ,in a perfect world the dogs should
have been rescued or a third way found that would
have lent some mercy to the situation.

If this had been your pet it would be devestating
    to you.

tragic all the way around no question.

More like execution for the unwarranted killing of pets.

You are under the false assumption that there were only two options. Obviously, if a sub-human was able to get there to massacre these dogs, then a rescue group should have been told they were there and they could have been rescued.

Or even better the idiots running the human side of rescue should have allowed the people to take their pets with them, especially since they were allowed to bring them in the first place to the evacuation center.

I used to be a Republican. I now consider myself to be an independent. I see no point in trying to tie myself to defending one party any longer.

    Ken,

Are you really serious that you would divert search and rescue teams away from human missions to find a shelter for abandoned dogs???

I'm a dog lover, big time. Have one that is so spoiled she doesn't even realize she's a dog. And if anything like this happened to her I'd be pretty torn up about it. But we're not talking about your typical Monday morning stuff here. This was in the middle of the largest natural disaster in our country in our lifetime.

I do agree that animals should have never been allowed in the centers. For screaming out loud, they didn't even have food or water available for the humans

Actually the dogs should have been allowed in all of the shelters. You may have noticed that in the Galveston evacuation that this mistake was not made. The mayor of Galveston specifically said that people could bring their pets along.

There are organizations that exclusively do animal rescue in these situations such as Noah's Wish, the Humane Society of the United States, etc. Therefore, no diversion of the resources from human rescue are required.

But there were human rescues taking place where the stupid decision to not allow the rescuees to bring their pets along was made.

Frankly, I would stay with my dogs and die with them, if it came down to it, instead of leaving them to die by themselves if I was told that I couldn't bring them with me.

If people want animals, then they should pay the taxes to evacuate and take care of them.

I don't think just shooting animals is humane or fun. But, when you cannot feed them, the dogs and cats go ferile.

Dogs and cats are illegal in cars and planes unless restrained because of the danger the present.

Why should we treat animals differently in a disaster?

Dogs are not illegal in cars. I have dogs in my car quite often...and not always restrained.

Anyone of those families evacuated that receive a salary do pay taxes.

These dogs could have, should have, been rescued. If a sub-human can get to them to massacre them, then an animal rescue group should have been allowed to get to them to rescue them.

I do not pay taxes for abandoned pets. Except to put them to sleep.

Sometimes they are put down 'humanely', but in Texas we they are often put down when we shoot 'em.

A pet is a responsibility. I feel sorry for those in Katrina that lost their pets, but they are an owner's responsibility.

Not when the government says you must evacuate or when the government is rescuing a person with pets. There is already a bill in Congress to address this situation.

I thank you for letting us know to contact our representatives.

A soldier (sailor, policeman) should not have to worry about being bitten by a pit bull, much less a pet snake during a crisis.

It is one thing to legislate them to sacrifice their lives for people, but for abandoned pets?
