Ok, you can {smile}...just a little; but the granny's got a question & "maybe" one of y'all can give me an answer! [IMG]

Now in case ya didn't know it, I don't know nuthing 'bout these things! I'm using my daughter's[Farmer's Wife]old computer. She showed me how to turn it on & turn it off...oh, & how to work the mouse, surf & do email.

I don't use it for anything else other than surfing(mostly church websites etc),email & of course, I live here! ;) I don't do/need all the other stuff a computer's used for: keep records, pay bills, etc.

If I've made myself clear in what I've tried to say, isn't there a machine that just lets you email & travel on the internet? I think it's called a net-appliance.

Would this be worth having(for someone like me)? Would I still be able to "hear" the songs, etc. & all the thingies that happens on some sites?

Well, that's all I was wondering about...just seeing if anyone knows the pros & cons on such a thing. Thanks in advance for any advice. [IMG]

Net computers haven't really caught on the way many people predicticted. You can buy them, but they aren't much cheaper than a bargain desktop, and the amount of functionality you lose isn't worth it in my opinion. Are you just looking to save money? Or were you hoping for something easier to use?

Hey, Bro.Eric! I was really wanting something a little more simple. I have another daughter who is homeschooling & she could probably use this...

And if something's gonna have to be bought, instead of me buying "another" computer, I thought about getting one of those, since I don't need all this "extra".

What are you using now? Windows? If so, you might find a Machintosh much easier to use and much less likely to crash. Machintoshes make great computers for non-computer people. Most professional graphic artists use Machintoshes so they don't get distracted by all the computer stuff.

A first-gen iMac is very competitively priced, and would do all the web stuff you do now:

    http://www.apple.com/imac/g3/

    [edited to fix broken link]

I don't use a Mac myself, but everyone I know who has one loves it and wouldn't switch to Windows unless they really had to...

Yes, Eric, I know the Mac Only crowd.

Seriously, the iMac seems to be a very simple machine to use. Net appliances, as far as I can tell, have been disappointing because when you find out you really want to do something else than what their limited functions provide, you're out of luck. And the cost difference is minimal, considering the fire sale prices out there.

Granny, what are you using now?

'Morning folks! Sorry I slipped out on ya, but it was waaay passed the granny's bedtime! [IMG]

The paperwork that Robin gave me sez "Windows 95". They keep up with all their farm-records, his sermon notes, her sewing stuff, etc. & needed something bigger(?), better(?)...so I got their old one.

I was always over at her house looking up info as to how to help my son who's "caught-up" in that "oneness/Jesus-only" doctrine & felt guilty that I was "tying" up their computer.

But my other daughter, Lori, is homeschooling & I think she could probably use this better for her work. All I do is read, post on here & do email.

Ok, I'm going to be different in my advice, which is...learn all the wonderful things about your computer. [IMG]
Do you write? Use it to type up your stories and save them. You can keep journals for your grandchildren, and have them printed out AND on disc. (very kewl)
If you have a printer. [IMG] You can also design your own birthday cards, etc.. You can download songs and have them playing on your speakers while you're not online.
You can copy and paste information off of the net and save it in programs to read for later.
Kids that come over can play games, you can buy learning cd's for them in math, reading, whatever they need to be better at.
I have a bible program loaded so I can read and study...which is kewl because it had all kinds of references and books and versions (like in Latin, Spanish, etc.) and commentaries to look up all kinds of info on any verse.
There's just a lot it's useful for offline!
Someone mentioned computer crashes. I've never had Windows crash in the last few years. (get a virus remover) I HAVE had the internet freeze or say "blah blah blah has performed and illegal blah blah blah and will be shut down". A lot of people don't realize that for most internet access programs you need to have quite a bit of free space open, like a good 80%. All you have to do is close out programs you aren't using (press ctrl, alt, and delete to see a list of the ones that are running, you only need a few specific ones on for the net) and make sure your cache, temp files are cleaned out, and it will stop happening. (or just get a computer with more memory!)

This is neither here nor there, but there is a GREAT free Bible software package at www.e-sword.net. In addition to Bible text, you can install commentaries, Strongs numbers/definitions, and all kinds of useful study tools. And you'll be happy to know King James is the default translation it comes with [IMG]

E-Sword has been very useful in my studies, so I'd definitely recommend it. And you can't beat the price (FREE, FREE, FREE [IMG] )

Wow, Gina~that sure is a lot for the granny to understand! You must be one smart cookie! ;)

I guess I'm lazy & don't wanna learn how to do all that stuff...I write my journals, etc. by hand & draw my own cards on paper; in other words I do it the old-time way, hahaha [IMG]

I don't understand about "viruses", that "illegal operation" thingie, which often happens, & all that other stuff that comes up.
And then I pester Farmer's Wife about it.

It has a printer, but it seems to always "jam" & then I don't know how to "fix" it. :( (See what a big pill I am)?

It does have a Deerhunter game that my husband plays & a card game of some kind, but when the children come over, we play outside, or bake cookies...Ain't I a mean ol'granny? :D

That's why I figured if I just had something to get on the 'net & do email, that'd be great & all I'd really need & I wouldn't bother nobody!

Well, a first generation iMac costs about $800, and Macs are MUCH more stable than PC's and also easier to use. I don't know if you could get a net-only computer for much cheaper. Gateway charges over $1000 for their all-in-one for example. Your husband's Deer-Hunter game wouldn't run on the Mac (unless there's a Mac version), but you could get him another game [IMG]

I'm not laughing! It's possible to get a decent computer for less.

My laptop is a lifesaver, and I "won" that on UBID.com, an auction site. Laptops are very pricey, and at the time it was nearly as "hot" as our desktop computer with portability to boot! I paid much less than I would have at a store, and I didn't want the latest model, just something that could do what I wanted. You can't buy an older model unless you go to a store that deals in refurbished computers.

So check this link to UBID.com. You have to have an account there, but you could get one:

    UBID.com

Scroll down to "950MHz and Below" where starting bids are around $100.00. Shipping is expensive for heavy items, but it's still cheaper than buying new. READ THE DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY. Some are missing parts and you don't want that hassle!

I had reservations about posting this, but I don't consider an auction site to be "gambling." There is an element of chance to it, but it's a smart way for manufacturers to unload overstocks and you can get good deals, too! Clint says it's just like a farmer's auction! (This city chick doesn't get it).

    Good luck!

PS: "emachines" are the cheapest way to go to get a new machine, FYI.

Thanks, Sis.Margie, for the info & the link! We have a preacher friend who has been looking for a "laptop"...I had wished I could've bought Bro.Adam's back when he was advertising his on here.

Yeah, Farm auctions! As da Gina sez~"kewl!" ;) Robin bought her Bernina sewing machine on e-bay & I was worried sick over that decision!

Someone else said I could unload all my "Carnival Glass" & other what-nots there...but I said "no way, Ho-say!" The "suspense" & not knowing who to trust, etc. is awful!

Thank you, Eric, about the iMac clue. I like Macs.."Big Macs!" hahaha [IMG] My daddy was called "Mac" 'cause of our last name [McDavid]. Now I'm an Acton.

Well, l@@ks like I'm in over my head on this discussion, which I've truly appreciated all your input; but when the time comes, I know the Lord will show me what to do that is right for me.

p.s. Didn't mean to leave ya out, rsr; thank you so much for the link & what you said about the iMac. I thought those net appliances would've really been the way to go!
