Dateline 1860 Stephen Douglas beats A. Lincoln and will become the 16th President of the United States

How would this headline have changed history?

My opinion only, but I think the Civil War would have either been delayed or never happened. Slavery would have ended some 10 or so years later when a Republican finally won an election and a later Civil War broke out, or during that time, we decided collectively as a nation to abolish slavery.

Since the main cause of the war was state succession, chances are the states would not have gone to that extreme if Douglas had won.

As what would be different today, probably not much.

I'm sure there was buzz around the country that the South, esp SC would succede if Lincoln was elected. So if Douglas had run, than both the northern southern states may have been willing to comprise a little witht he evuantal end of slavery. Had it happend that way, there would have been no carpetbaggers, which cause a lot of problems in the South
