    Dr. Steven J. Lawson is pastor of the Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, Mobile, AL.

    Here's his list of the Top 5 expositors, in his opinion:

    1. John Calvin

    2. Charles Haddon Spurgeon

    3. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

    4. James Montgomery Boice

    5. John MacArthur

    I think any serious student in the know regards Calvin very highly for his expository gifts . He certainly merits the #1 rating .

    Although I respect and value the ministry of C.H.S. very much , I do not think he ranks as high as second-place after Calvin . There are a host of other men of God who should occupy a ranking just after Calvin . Men such as the following come to mind : John Owen , Thomas Goodwin , John Gill , Matthew Henry , A.W. Pink , Matthew Poole , Francis Turretine , William Hendrikson , Leon Morris , Herman Bavinck ( among others ) deserve consideration . The LORD Himself knows . The value of men are weighed by other merits also . I think Charles Spurgeon is second to Calvin with respect to his overall ministry , but not for his expository abilities . He wasn't an expository preacher . Dr. Gill would have to be considered much higher on that that scale than Spurgeon for instance .

    All five men have been excellent gifts of the Lord to His Church -- all but Dr. MacArthur are in glory .

    One would have to consider at least one of the English Puritans, perhaps Thomas Manton, as fitting somewhere on this list.

    1. I quite agree with you on those impressive names--Dr. Gill, Matthew Henry for sure.

    2. Spurgeon had a unique style and I would not call it wholely expository.

    3. BTW, for 200yrs scholars and historians tried to figure out what version of the Bible Calvin used; however, they would realize that he preached from both the Hebrew and Greek text. How about that!

    Manton deserves consideration on a longer list. No doubt.

    The list is really good, however I would agree that Spurgeon does not belong at #2. He was a gifted preacher and a man used greatly by God, but his style was not expository.
