Drinking Age Debate

I didn't read the linked article, but my first thoughts. Only bad will come of this if they do it. However I understand why this would come up when we are sending young men to die in a war. If memory serves me correct it was after the Viet Nam war that many states lowered the age to eighteen once before.

I think they should raise the age to 427. If one makes it that far in their earthly life, by then he or she will know the poison is to be avoided like the plague.

The drinking age should not be lowered, but lowering it to 18 would be more legally consistent. I find it compelling to argue against the system in which someone can take a bullet for America but can't take a drink.

That being said, I oppose anything that increases the likelihood of underage drinking (and overage drinking, for that matter). Kids get liquor now, but just imagine how much more easily 14-15 year olds will be able to get alcohol when all they have to do is ask a friend at their high school to buy it for them.

 

They might as well make the drinking that teens are doing legal. :laugh: They're going to do it anyway. Actually, I don't agree with lowering it. Teens are not responsible enough. Many adults aren't responsible enough--evidenced by all the booze related auto accidents and deaths--as well as booze related fights and other violence spurred by booze-fogged heads that can't think straight.

 

And to think three of the states are for dropping the age limit for those who are in the military.

Shouldn't those who are fighting to defend out country be free of that poison that causes one to forget the law and perverts judgment?

 

Ah, excuse me if I am wrong here but can't active personnel, under 21 buy alcohol on base? All the college students are clamoring for it as they are jealous that military personnel can get it. It also sounds to me that this has the liquor businesses are involved and wanting to get in on the military sales. Plus all the increased revenue that they would gain from the college students.

BTW, I am opposed to the raising of the age limit.

 

Before we were married, The Wife and I spent many a quiet night staying warm nursing a pitcher of beer when the drinking age was 18 in NY, St Lawrence U and Clarkson U nee College, class of '62. Then off to hitch hike back to the dorm 13 miles down the road at bar closing and 30 below zero.

What do young people do these days? 10 years ago my #2 Daughter complained about getting thrown out of Dennys for sitting to long.

 

I think that would be unconstitutional. Why ruin a kid's life for a stupid mistake?

If we are discussing vehicular manslaughter, it's a different matter, but I don't want to lock up a sixteen year old for 6 years just for having a beer.

What's next? 6 months for jaywalking?

 

As a Navy Vet let me say, you all are kidding yourself if you think those in the military dont drink now. Lowering the age will not affect them much either way.

 

I dont think so. I was over 21 when I was in so it did not effect me.

 

My husband just said the same thing.

 

They should pay the penalty of law. The penalty is not years of imprisonment. Should they be punished? Certainly. Should they be subjected to draconian measures? No.

Throwing a kid in jail for years for drinking is not proportional to the offense.

 

I was thinking back to my Army days and don't recall any problem getting trashed on the weekends...
