Does anyone else have a problem with drums being played in the church?

I am getting so I don't want to go to church anymore where they have drum sets as part of the music in the church. It may be my age, and my background, but it annoys me beyond distraction.

God bless the young people, but I think we need a church for senior citizens.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Do you mean like a moral problem with it?

    No.

We have two services, a "traditional" service and a "contemporary" service.

I prefer the traditional service but I'm occasionally called on to play in the band in the contemporary service so I put up with it.

    Smoke-Eater:

No, not a moral issue at all. I just can't stand the drums cos that is all I hear. I think I am in a music hall rather than a church. I appreciate that it is the "modern" thing. All the evangelical churches around here have gone this route, and I am beginning to appreciate the "other" churches where they don't, even though they don't preach the word. I want to change the church's service to the Dave Letterman Show, if you understand what I am saying.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Brother Jim1999!!
I'm with you brother!! And we are about as far away as North is from South--You being in Canada and me in Mississippi!!

Drums are hard to play--if you play them right!! There is a big difference between a musician playing them and the "Fly By Nite" guys!! John Phillip Sousa would roll over in his grave if he knew what a mess a drummer can make at church!!

    Your friend,
    Blackbird

Love very LITTLE about CCM. Find my spirit and soul are uplifted by the great hymns and historical/classical music. If it isn't 500 years old, it's a little suspect!!

Could live without drums ANYWHERE. Rhythm is a very small part of music (compared to melody, harmony, lyrics). And drums puts the emphasis on the least important part.

Dumb. Drum. Dumb. Drum. Dumb. Drum. Dumb.

[Disclaimer: The above is found in the opinion only zone. Am not trying to make a moral lesson, just sharing my gut.]

CCM is a generic term for much of the modern music genre - shallow lyrics, repetitive verses, heavy emphasis on rhythm to "drive" it, emotion-evoking (while pretending to glorify God).

LOTS of good discussion of this genre on the Music Forum. This is not the place, but will allow the thread to continue here.

DISCLAIMER: Not "all" CCM can be easily characterized (or libeled) as I have done above. There are some beautiful songs being written that have depth of content and expression.

Did "As the Deer" last Sunday and today we did "Open our Eyes, Lord". Okay, NOT real hymns like "Holy, Holy, Holy" but still perfectly acceptable.

But most of CCM is drum or at least "beat" driven, easier to play on guitar/drums than organ/piano.

Its a shame that music can be something else (like Bible translations) that can keep CHristians apart. I am not pointing fingers anywhere, just wish it wasn't dividing us. Our church has the best music I ever heard. It is pretty much just hymns with an occasional chorus. I, myself, love drums, but we don't use them. I think we ALL need to give up our rights to have the music style we like best and/or the version we we like best.

I am told, though I was not there to verify as it was slightly before my time, that Charles Wesley wrote words to the tunes that the drunks were singing on the street. It was their equivelant to the top 10!We now call it church music! Interesting how time brings a different perspective on things.
    yours, Jon.

Well, I seem to be the only person in this discussion for drums...but then I'm a drummer. It is impossible to have music without rhythm. It is not impossible to have music without melody and harmony. I can understand that sometimes the drums are too loud. Get your church to purchase an electric drum kit. Then you have total volume control, so that you can get a mix without one thing overpowering everything else.
By the way, it is not dumb to put musical emphasis on rhythm. I'm not saying that you should take away melody and harmony though, just that rhythm is a fundamental part of every piece of music ever written. Without rhythm, music falls apart.

    God Bless

    Matt
