DVD-R question

    I've got a question that I can't seem to find a definite answer for. I've done a Google search, but the info I found was sketchy at best.

    Can music and/or data be burned to a DVD, or just movies (homemade or copies)? I know on a regular CD it show 700MB/80 minutes and on a DVD it shows 4.7GB/120 minutes. Is it possible to burn music to a DVD, and get up to 2 hours on it (or tons and tons of pictures and/or text files), or will the computer recognize what I'm trying to do, and not let me do it?

    I'm running on Vista, so I don't know if that'd make a difference or not.

    Any info, comments and/or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Yep, can burn any sort of data to dvd discs the same as cd. Added bonus to backing up that way is most newer dvd players can handle mp3 and jpg files.

    Right on. I ripped our music librarty of over 500 cds and put them on DVDs in mp3 format - about ten dvds as I recall :thumbs:

    Our home entertainment unit (cheapy) even plays them.

    Do you need special software to convert files into a DVD format??

    If so what programs to you need, and where can you get it??

    I use Nero Burning ROM on my tower system, and NTI CD/DVD Maker on my laptop.

    Both are able to burn mixed data to CD or DVD.

    I think there may be some confusion here.

    If by DVD format you mean a movie that you can pop into your DVD player connected to your TV, then you will need special software.
    You will also need movie files etc.

    But there are two different types of DVDs, DVD Video and DVD Data
    Both use the exact same Discs.
    The difference is what you copy to them

    If you burn regular data, probably only a computer will be able to read it unless it is mp3 files or jpeg pictures files and probably you can read those on your DVD player but it will vary from player to player on what all it will support.
