DVD slowdown problem

    I bought a laptop around 7 months ago. For the first few months it was fine but now, when I play dvds on it, sometimes the dvd slows down during the movie and the speech is ahead of the images....has this happened t anyone else??

    Let's see... It's running WinXP?

    I forget how, but there's a way to change the priority of programs running under XP.

    I suspect that one of two things is happening. (Actually three)

    1. WinXP is running some of it's own background tasks with a priority close to that of the DVD player software.

    2. Other software loaded since initial purchase may be hogging resources. 256MB Ram is NOT enough for a WinXP system with multiple programs running in the background. Especially if any of them are MX products, like Outlook...

    3. Either the DVD player is dirty and needs cleaning or the DVD is showing some age.

    Those are my best guesses at this time.

    Additional information about what software is running in the background may be helpful. Like what Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm, etc. may be running.

    Also, what DVD player software are you using? Have you upgraded or changed it since initial purchase?

    Also, are you trying to read 'archival back-up' copies? Some hardware and software get *real* intermittent when you try to load one of them.

    Sometimes they won't even see the disk.

    I'm running winXP home ed..Im using a Toshiba Satellite with P4-2.2ghz, 512 Ram....the machine is 7 months old and in that time I've only watched around 10 DVD's....although I use it all the time for CD copying...maybe it is dirty....As for the software, I'm using the pre-installed software Toshiba gave me, although I do sometimes use Real player to watch DVD aswell...It never used to slow down...maybe if I were to re-format my HD it wouldn't do it?

    No, thanks, honestly...you have been a good help....I will probrably get a decent CD cleaner, in case its dirty. The software is called "Intervideo WinDvd 4 "....I dont know if the drivers for the dvd player are somehow integrated into this software or if it is just a DVD playing bit of software..maybe both..not sure.

    Intervideo WinDVD is a good program.

    My personal preference is CyberLink PowerDVD.

    It is a little smoother and handles DVD 'exceptions' better.

    WinDVD locked up my Win98se system many times when the drive had to do re-reads of data.

    So far, cross my fingers, PowerDVD hasn't even hiccuped.

    Other users may want to chime in here, though, or, you may want to try the Free Demo, before plunking down any extra money.

    I don't think 'restoring' your hard drive is going to 'fix' this though.

    Though 'Scandisking' and 'Defragmenting' usually do 'fix' a *lot* of slowdown and general weirdness problems with all versions of Windows.
