Bad idea. Set aside 1st Sat and Sun in November for national elections. No absentee ballots except for those who cannot physically get to the polls. If more workers, voting machines, smaller percents are needed then provide them.

- would that be 24 hour voting on SAT?
Open polls on Sat at 12 Noon Sat ( 7 am Hawaii)
Close polls on Sun at 9 PM Eastern time (5 pm Hawaii Time)
This would be only for Presidential elections

Since I'm now handicapped (stroke), I find that early voting works even better for me--provided one doesn't go on the FIRST day of early voting!!
There were more people there on the 1st day of early voting this time around than I've seen in a long time!

Does your State allow absentee balloting for those who are handicap?
I would say that would be better than early voting - again, as long as you don't mail it more than 10 days in advance.

I have no problem with absentee voting as long as it is absolutely necessary. I would agree with Salty that it should be constrained to 10 days ar so before the election.
I also oppose online voting. That is simply an invitation to disaster!

The only exception that comes to mind is to keep the polls open for 4 days, starting Saturday and ending on Tuesday. Open each day 6:00 am and close 6:00 pm, local time. Adequate security for those hours the polls are closed.
* Paper ballots with scanners, so manual re-counts can be done when circumstances warrant.
* Photo ID required.
* Fines and penalties to anyone who fails to ensure that votes of active servicemen overseas are counted.
*Absolutely no absentee ballots except for those who physically cannot get to the polls during those 4 days in their state of PRIMARY/PERMANENT residence.
* Tallies of votes are NOT released to the media until all polling places, across the nation, have closed on the last day of voting.
* Voter registration closes 14-30 days prior to November (enough time for states to process/verify regisrations prior to the election. Those changing place of residence, for example, during that time would qualify for absentee ballot.)
** Stipulations for votes for Presidency. All other voting in accordance state law.

There should not be a national standard for how long the polls are open. That is up to each state to decide. Personally, I like the idea of the Saturday-Tuesday open before the election, and strict control of absentee ballots. The name absentee means there has got to be a legitimate reason, like medical or military service.

This last election cycle, early voting was 8 days. They do allow absentee voting also...anyone in Florida can request an absentee ballot. That's our preferred method of voting. No lines, no confusion.
To vote early you must go to the Supervisor of Elections office in your county. Early voting was instituted here after the hanging chad debacle.
