Hello, Im a messianic Jew the emblem we have at our church is the Star of David with the cross of Christ in the Middle of the star. At work last night I was wearing it and a Pentecostal preacher I work with told me that our emblem was a curse against God, a disgrace to Jesus and that it belonged to satan. I tried to tell him why but he actuallcy tried to rip it off my shirt lapel. What think ye of this?

I guess I am a little unfamiliar with the history of the star of David and how it came about, etc. Doesn't each point have some meaning? I may be dreaming that up, not sure.

I don't think anyone has the power to curse God, much less a symbol. A disgrace to Jesus...again I'm not sure how a symbol is a disgrace, certainly the Jewish people have rejected their Messiah, but that has nothing to do with the symbol as far as I can tell.

And I totally disagree with it belonging to Satan as nothing in regard to Israel belongs to Satan as he is the god of this world and the god of the nations (Gentile nations) because Israel according to Scripture is not to be reckoned among the nations.

Just proves that Christians can still do some pretty mean and cruel things at times unfortunately

With all that being said and I don't want to hijack your thread, but maybe you can help a little. Why would you all have the star of David, which is definitely a symbol of Israel and then mix in the cross of Christ?

While I understand that Christ was a Jew and I understand His heritage and ties to Israel, we as Christians lose our national identities when we accept Jesus. We are no longer Jews or Greek (Gentiles), but we become a part of the one new man in Christ.

So my question is why to Jews who accept the substitutionary death and shed blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, try to hang on to their national identity as a Jew?

Seriously, I don't think that we have to forget who we are and about our heritage (not spiritual heritage, but ethnic) in order to be a Christian. Just as the Gentiles do not have to be physically circumcised to be a Christian, neither should Jews have to give up their ethnic heritage to be a Christian, as long as it doesn't conflict with Scripture.

The evangelist who was basically my spiritual mentor in the beginning used to draw those, (and he was even Pentecostal, though not one of those ridiculous, neurotic ones). He didn't even simply draw the cross in the middle of the star, but rather fixed it so that the horizontal line of the cross was the same as the top vertical line ('base' of upside down triangle), and that the bottom of the cross was the bottom point of the star (apex of upside down triangle). There were specific meanings to this; IIRC.
It is designed to show that Christ is the spiritual fulfillment of Judaism. This is useful, as we often try to point out the Jews that they can be 'complete Jews' in Christ. This doesn't impress most of them, but that is the basis of the concept.

That is like comparing apples and oranges, because the religion of the Jews is so connected to their national heritage.

Americans are a melting pot of probably 1,000s of different religions.

I'm not saying that you have to give up your heritage, but when one is in Christ they are no longer a Jew, so why call yourself a messianic Jew, because that's not what you are. You are a Christian/believer/disciple of Christ, etc., but no longer a Jew.

Just like Gentiles don't or shouldn't go around saying they are Gentile believers. We are no longer Gentiles, because the Bible says the Gentiles have no God. We are a part of the one new man in Christ.

This guy was way out of line. The fact that he wouldn't even listen to you, and then tried to physically assault you to remove it is reprehensible.

Hummm Christians (probley including the pentecostal you described) wear crosses. Its a symbol of their faith. Some wear flags with "God bless America" a statment of their faith in God. We even got them little fishes with "WWJD?" on them. I also see hearts whith crosses in the middle. the star of david is not satanic. check its jewish history.

star of david was used by the first church. using the grafted in symbol. which consists of the menorah on top - star of david in the middle - and fish on the bottom... i think thats how the order goes.... correct me if im wrong.

I'm not sure, but I think I know why this happened. I'm thinking that maybe the preacher thought the Star of David was a pentagram. A Star of David has 6 points and a pentagram (used by witches/Wiccans with one point up, and by Satanists with 2 points up) has 5, but I have found that Christians do confuse the two because at first glance, they can look similar.

So maybe he thought you were wearing a pentagram. That would account for his extreme reaction (still not a good one but it explains it).

Another point (heh, heh, pun intended)......I doubt the pentecostal preacher knows this, but the star of David is used by ritual magicians and is called the Seal of Solomon. It's used in occult magick - I think it started with the medieval alchemists but it is used this way today.

True. For both of those reasons, any kind of star people think is satanic. I drew the symbol on a blacknoard once, and the class I was in (who were unsaved even!) thought it was some satanic symbol!
So we do have to be careful with these symbolks, though. (including the cross). They represent spiritual things, but they can also delve into the appearance of idolatry.
