Is it wise to enlist Muslims into our U.S. Military?
There are those that believe that the recent election of a Muslim into the U.S. Congress should not be. Will enlisting Muslims into the U.S Military be a Catastrophe.

There have already been problems, but we have been enlisting them for a long time now. I don't anticipate any major problems occurring in the future, but it does worry me. You can be a foreign citizen and enlist (which may open opportunity for undesirable consequences).

Yes, I hope that no major problems occur with Muslims in the military. Yet it is still kind of tough being an American and being for equal rights for everyone while holding on to ones own perspective of their own Christian beliefs.

Sign them up and put them on the Mexican border. When the few remaining "real" Americans wake up and protest the internationalization of American they can be used to round us up.

There are no constitutional restrictions for a Muslim to enlist in the military, or to be enlisted.
So, I guess all that the military can do is to watch their backs.

I posted this on another thread. There have been quite a few problems with muslims serving in the US Military according to this Washington Post article:

Legally we can't, of course, keep them out of the military. I am surprised some of the more liberal on here haven't been calling out the bigot card just for this being posted.

I do think we should use common sense and they should not be invovled in the fighting in the middle east and have no access to intelligence regarding the war.

There is no way to guage their loyalties to their country vs. their religion, but we can use some common sense and take measures to insure we are not endangering our national security and other troops in the field.

Some Muslims I know are great people. Some of course are not. In the Bible are some who killed people such as Moses. I do not think Timothy McVeigh was a Muslim. I am certain he was just as hell bound as many others.

Timothy McVeigh was working with/for (Saddam) Iraq. But that is another thread.

I know many from other countries who have come here legally and are upset that the US lets so many in from south of the border.

Personally I think it is driven by large companies such as Tyson and other food companies.

Not only Muslims, but Iraqi citizens can enlist into the military, provided they are permanent resident aliens.

Gb93433 is right about there being good Muslim.

I would worry about some, as to where their allegiance would lie if they had to make the choice supporting America against other Muslim nations. I understand the Iraqi citizens wanting to be involved in the war with Iraq in our current situation, but what about later conflicts that may arise?

I've had Muslim friends and acquaintances.
I still wouldn't trust them behind my back, though, if I were in the Military with them, don't matter whether we're overseas, or stateside.

Extra thorough background checks are in order, especially for muslims of middle east descent.

    If they pass, enlist them.

If they are Iraqi citizens, they don’t get those extra thorough background checks. As a resident alien, they are not authorized to hold positions requiring a security clearance.

This narrows down the jobs they can choose, but not the units in which they can enlist. (For example, you can be a logistics specialist in a military intelligence unit as a legal alien, but not a counter intel. agent).

The military has increased the general background checks for all applicants with law violations, though.
