I've been watching that train spill as I'm on the border of NC/VA/TN.
It's not good. The Ohio river, which our river (The New River) drains into is contaminated. There are some wells contaminated too in East Palestine.
It happened because:
1. The railroad companies are incentivized to cut corners to maximize profit. They recently announced a stock buyback program, but they can't be bothered to properly inspect their rail cars. They need to be heavily fined for failing to maintain their equipment as a lesson to other railways carrying hazmat.
2. Biden ignored the rail workers earlier this year that were calling this stuff out and saying that a hazmat situation spill is going to occur at some point because of the railroad company's maintenance failures.

There is little controversy about Chernobyl directly causing about 2000 deaths, but the long term death claims ranging into the tens of thousands, may be anti-nuke propaganda. But certainly thus far the immediate impact of the train wreck and inept follow on response does not seem to have caused very many human deaths.

We don’t know, that I have heard, the cause of the derailment. I’ve seen stories recently of an organized attack on the infrastructure of the USA including intentional derailments of trains.
Are they even investigating the cause? I saw Buutigigg, Sec of Trans, say it was Trumps fault, but didn’t give specific results of any investigation.

Several stories point to faulty brakes or faulty maintenance.
A mechanical issue with an axle of one of the 150 cars is believed to be the cause of the derailment of at least 50 of the cars, though the National Transportation Safety Board has not yet made an official determination of the cause.
Security footage captured in Salem, Ohio — around 20 miles west of East Palestine — before the derailment showed sparks or flames under at least one of the cars on the train, which was transporting goods from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania.
And this:

NTSB investigators have identified and examined the rail car that initiated the derailment. Surveillance video from a residence showed what appears to be a wheel bearing in the final stage of overheat failure moments before the derailment. The wheelset from the suspected railcar has been collected as evidence for metallurgical examination. The suspected overheated wheel bearing has been collected and will be examined by engineers from the NTSB Materials Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
LOL! Blame it on a terrorist attack, or even better, Trump! LOL. They were saving money and moving hazardous stuff as non hazardous. They have contaminated town after town and river after the river with highly hazardous material. They even compared it Chernobyl it is so devastating. Probably worse than Chernobyl because of the populated areas will be effected more in the USA. Blame anyone but the train company! Bidon will protect big business.
