    Ephesians 2:1-7 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

    In context, what does Paul mean by the word "dead" in verses 1 and 5? Please back up your exegesis in context.

    <shudder!>

    Dead in trespasses and sins. What a thoroughly devastating thought! How utterly dreadful! Having zero knowledge of God, His love for me, and His plan of salvation; a heartbeat away from separation from Him for eternity. Thank God for His mercy and grace. [IMG]

    genesis12, so I take it you consider "dead" to be all those things you mentioned: zero knowledge of God, His love and the plan of salvation. In other words, fulfilling 1 Corinthians 2:14:

    1 Cor. 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

    to be spiritually dead is not to be spiritually unconscious, or hell would have no meaning. It is to be separated from God. Ref. John 17:3

    John 3:3 Jesus told Nicademus you "must be born again" meaning Nicademus was like Helen said "Spiritually DEAD" before salvation we are separated from a relationship with God because of our SIN.

    Now being born again we are spiritually made ALIVE in Christ to have fellowship with God that we didn't have before.

    Another reason we cannot lose our salvation, once we are made alive how do we again become dead? Now, not even physical death can seperate us from the LOVE of God.

    Helen, you're correct. Being spiritually dead does not mean you are spiritually unconscious. Man is a spiritual creature. According to the text I believe it to mean that the spiritually dead person is dead to the things of God. That is why I quoted 1 Cor. 2:14. Before we came into a right relationship with Jesus Christ, we were dead to the things of God but "alive" to the domain of darkness and sin. Our spiritual position was sort of a living death. Alive physically but dead spiritually.

    Spiritual death has to be seperation from God. What else could it be?! It can't be anything else! I agree Bill and defy anyone to prove diffent from scriptures.
