Equal pay in soccer???

A lot has been said lately about equal pay for soccer players - regardless of gender.

So should the players receive equal pay?

I see several things involved.
Attendance
Quality of play
TV ratings?

How about this

Lets have a best of 7 games between the mens and women's teams!
Then we will see if their quality of play is the same!

Based on merit, the U.S. women should be paid more than the U.S. men. The U.S. women win world championships.

As far as quality of play, I think men's and women's soccer are equally good - if you mean based on entertainment value.

But what was the quality of the teams that the women beat?
and the quality of the teams that the men lost to?

Not sure what you mean by "entertainment value"

I am talking about head-to-head competition. Which team is better

How much soccer have or do you watch, Salty?

In the World Cup they both play the best in the world. Soccer is not American football. Size is not an issue.

Do you believe in pay based on merit or results or accomplishments?

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if in a head-to-head competition, that the U.S. women would beat the U.S. men.

Maybe come November we will see much better results from the U.S. men in this years FIFA World Cup Tournament, but historically, on the world stage, the men's team has been mediocre at best - they didn't even qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Tournament. Remember, in the U.S. men are oriented toward American football - much more money and adulation available for them there.

Tell you what, @Salty, when the men equal the women in the U.S. and win 4 FIFA World Cups and 4 Olympic gold medals, then we can discuss if the men should get paid as much as the women. ;)

To qualify for equal pay in any sport, women should compete against men, and then if they can win at all, they should be paid equally!

Why do women get the same pay at tennis, when they normally only play 3 sets, and men 5???

Except for goalkeepers. :Biggrin
It's speed that would likely allow the men's team to prevail; the fastest men will outrun even the fastest women. (This said by one who was never the fastest anything, or why I played on the line in American football.)

Sure. I hate soccer. EQUAL PAY = Bankruptcy, and I won't have to see it popping up all over my guide.

Pay should be based on money generated by the one being paid. A guy here in town sounds 10x better than Luke Bryan. Luke Bryan puts enough folks in seats to make millions a year. Local guy puts enough folks in seats to pay for gas for his truck and camper.

They're all overpaid. Kicking a ball around for a living contributes nothing to society.
Agreed. It amazes me that grown people will act like fools about sports. I live in Ga and grown people bark at each other because they UGA fans. Stupidity in it's purest form.

Are many players overpaid!? Of course
Do we sometimes make too much of sports - of course
Has sports went to the extreme - to some extent - yes!

But lets not go to the other extreme either

This letter from FDR in 1942 explanations the importance of sports

Pillar to Post: RETRO FILES / HOW FDR KEPT BASEBALL ALIVE DURING WWII

and BTW - I prefer to attend minor league games - esp Class A or AA
or development league Basketball games (ie ABA)

also Division 1 - college - is nothing more than AAA minor leagues for the pros.

Like I said, if the men's soccer team ever gets to be as good as the women's soccer team, then we can talk about the men getting paid as much as the women. Frankly, at this point, the women's soccer team should be paid way more than the men's soccer team. Pay should be according to merit, not gender.
