Suicide of Ergun Caner's son reported
Posted on Jul 30, 2014 | by Art Toalston

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (BP) -- Braxton Caner, 15-year-old son of Ergun and Jill Caner, committed suicide July 29, according to reports at the SBC Voices website and on Facebook and Twitter.

Ergun Caner is president of Brewton-Parker College, a Baptist-affiliated college in Mount Vernon, Ga.

A July 29 blog post by SBC Voices editor Dave Miller stated:

"Word has begun to leak out about the tragedy that has come upon the Ergun Caner family. Braxton Caner, the 15 year-old son of Ergun Caner, has committed suicide, according to reports that have become public.

"I know from experience the devastation that suicide brings in families, though the loss of a child must multiply that grief in ways I can't imagine. I held off saying anything until the news was leaked by other sources. Now that it has been made public, let me express my sympathy to Dr. Caner, his family, and the entire Brewton-Parker College family."

Miller, a former first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention and a Sioux City, Iowa, pastor, added, "When something like this happens, God's people pray. We express to the Caner family our deepest sympathies."

Oh heartbreaking!! So often, there is mental illness involved with the person committing suicide and it's been a long road with them and the family. I can't imagine how terrible this is for them. I will be praying for them. :(

Mental illness?

How about some weirdo trolling the boy's social network posts then publishing a whole article about them at The Pulpit and Pen / Reformation Montana?

WOW! This is just soooo wrong. I won't say that the attacks on his father led to his suicide. But when you look at this guy's blog and the way he goes after Ergun's son, it makes me wonder if perhaps he was just tired of all of it? And when folks start coming after him for something he had nothing to do with? when do we say enough is enough?

Help us Jesus!!!

We do not need to be bashing the Caners at this time. For goodness sakes some people just do not know how to give it a rest.

Did I miss something? I think Jerome was just asking the question. Nobody in this thread has been bashing the Caners. It's been just the opposite.

I can only imagine the pain. May the family experience the God of all comfort.

He was just speaking fondly of his kids on Sunday. He spoke about he had not planned to have any kids because he wanted to get his Ph. D and be an intellectual. And that he was so happy that God didn't listen to him because he would have missed out on the joy he got when he could go to different churches and countries to preach and his boys get to tag along.

Why don't you attempt to love your neighbor as yourself? Your post is ridiculous and uncalled for.

I think you misunderstand Jerome. I believe he's indicating the blogger's posts against Caner and specifically Caner's son are at least partially to blame for this unfortunate incident.

I doubt I've misunderstood. Have you read the link and how it attempts to shame Caner? It's not necessary at this time to shame him or his family.

How very sad. May the Lord display grace, mercy, and divine comfort to the Caner family.

Tell me how he could not know, given his obsession with the Caners and the fact he obviously follows the Twitter accounts of both father and son closely so he can post the next alleged "dirt" on one of them.

You're assuming, accusing as if you have all knowledge, and then to top that off you add ad hominem in your prior post. Grow up.
