ETERNAL COVENANT.
What the Covenant is? The Biblical Covenant is very much the same as the earthly covenant between number of parties. But the GOD'S Covenant is different in one aspect, it is eternal.
Because GOD lives forever and cannot die, His promises and oaths are also eternal, no matter in which period of time in human history the GOD'S promises are made, they are eternal. All GOD'S promises and oaths are also considered as a Covenants between two or more parties. In the Bible under word "Covenant" also meant the Law, Commandments, and Ordinances of GOD.
The Biblical Covenant is basically the Law of GOD established between GOD and certain individual, or with people, or with entire human kind (New Testament for example).
Concerning the Sabbath Day, it also considered by GOD as a Covenant with those who accepted and observe it.
Exodus 31.16.18, Exodus 32.15-16, Isaiah 56.2.4.6-7
16."Therefore the Israelites shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual Covenant."
18.When GOD finished speaking with Moses on mount Sinai, He gave him the two tablets of the Covenant, tablets of stone written with the finger of GOD.
At first GOD established His Covenant with Noah. In it He promised no more world-wide flood. Another Covenant GOD instituted with Abraham, He promised to Abraham to be the GOD of his descendants.
When Israel was formed, GOD re-established His Covenant with the sons of Israel many times, because Israelites not always followed their GOD and they broke His Covenant many times.
Disobedience to the Covenant of GOD basically is generational thing, because when one generation obeyed it, the other generation may not do so and may go astray, and because of these constant changes the Covenant of GOD with Israel must be renewed every time when the people of Israel turned back to their GOD.
The Covenant of Perpetual Priesthood was also initiated between GOD and Levites.
Numbers 25.13
13."It shall be for him and for his descendants after him a Covenant of perpetual Priesthood, because he was zealous for his GOD and made atonement for the Israelites."
Interesting to notice that if a certain agreement or contract (covenant) among the peoples of the Earth is broken by one party, the other party no longer under such contract and can exit the agreement or file a lawsuit.
But with GOD'S Covenant, no matter with whom it was made, cannot be broken by GOD. The people, as their natural behavior in many cases, can violate, void, and break the earthly covenant and even GOD'S Covenant. But GOD is not a human being, He is always faithful to His words, oaths, and promises, and because of it He cannot break His Own Covenant, due to His holiness, righteousness, and justice.
2Timothy 2.13
13.If we are faithless, He remains faithful, He cannot deny Himself.
The Bible also mentioning the Covenant of Peace. Basically it is the same Covenant as the Old Testament Covenant, only the name of it is different.
Covenant of Peace: Malachi 2.4-5.8.10.14, Ezekiel 37.26, 34.25, Isaiah 54.10, Numbers 25.10-13
The so called New Covenant is the extension of the Old Covenant, with a difference that the New Covenant contains only Spiritual Commandments of the Old Covenant.
New Covenant: Jeremiah 31.31.33, Matthew 20.28, Mark 14.24, Luke 22.20, 2Corinthians 3.6, Hebrews 8.8.10.13. The Messenger of the New Covenant is Jesus Christ in human flesh. The Messenger of the Old Covenant also was Jesus Christ, but at that time He was as the Holy Spirit.
Sometimes Jesus called His New Covenant as the Covenant of Blood. For this New Covenant Jesus Christ spill His Blood and His Blood became as a seal of His New Covenant. This "Seal" represents forgiveness by Sacrificial Blood of Christ for committed sins of every individual on Earth, as long as the individual accepts the Blood of Christ for forgiveness of His sins.
The Old Covenant only required the blood of sacrificial animal to do the same, but in both cases without shedding blood there is no forgiveness.
The difference between OC and NC is that the Old Covenant sacrifices have to be constantly offered and cover the sin ones at the point and time of their sacrifice. For other sins conducted in the future, more sacrifices need to cover those sins. Each sacrifice for every sin. Then it comes to cover sins for entire nation as at the Day of Atonement, many animal sacrifices must be presented according to the Law given.
But the New Covenant required only Blood of Christ, ones for all times and for all generations to come, because Jesus Christ in eternal Spirit and so His Blood is also eternal, so His Blood covers all sins of all future generation of mankind, as long as it accepted by those who believes in the Lord.
Hebrews 9.22
22."And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."
Hebrews 13.20
20."Now the GOD of peace, Who brought up from the dead, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the Blood of Eternal Covenant, Jesus our Lord,"
But for how long the people will break and violate the Covenant of GOD? The mankind by their sinful nature cannot keep constantly Covenant of GOD. But GOD will do something that literally impossible for humans to do on their own.
Hebrew 8.10
10."This is the Covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days," says the Lord, "I will put My Laws into their minds, and I will right them upon their hearts, and I will be their GOD and they shall be My people."
The verse above means that GOD will input His Covenant into the souls of the people, the people He will select and chose, and this people will never break or violate His Statutes, His Commandments, and His Laws never again. They will literally possessed by the Ordinances of their GOD throughout their entire life and will be incapable to violate them. It will be impossible for them to break the Covenant. It may sounds very strange to some, but it will be done only to those who deserve such honor.
Jeremiah 33.19-22
19.And the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah saying,
20.this says the Lord, "If you can break My covenant for the day and My covenant for the night, so that day and night will not be at their appointed time,
21.then My Covenant may also be broken with David My servant, that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests My ministers."
This statement means, that if someone have power to cancel, annul, or alter the process of rotation of the Earth "so that day and night will not be at their appointed time," then GOD will acknowledge such extraordinary power and will cancel His Covenant with David to be king over Israel forever (Jeremiah 30.9) (Ezekiel 34.23-24, 37.24-25), and with Levites who appointed by GOD to served Him forever (Numbers 25.13).
That will be a very special Covenant that both sides will never break.
