He’s met with congressional leaders and advocates for immigration reform in the interests of regularising the situation of 50,000 Irish citizens in the US without legal status and creating a pathway to living and working there for future generations of Irish men and women. A picture of the Tánaiste walking the famed corridors of Capitol Hill with the Republican congressional leader and 2012 vice presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, even appeared on Twitter.
The picture, as the old maxim goes, says a thousand words. It is further proof positive of the extraordinary access that this small and strategically unimportant country enjoys in the US.
Indeed, Congressman Ryan, whose positions on economic and social issues place him firmly on his party’s right wing, was moved by the persistent entreaties of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform. He is now a firm supporter of immigration reform legislation – passed by the US Senate and stalled in the US House of Representatives – which would benefit the undocumented Irish. Congressman Ryan, who is proud of his Kilkenny ancestry, has affirmed that the efforts of Irish people based in the US, such as Billy Lawless and Ciaran Staunton, and Irish politicians, like Senator Mark Daly, played a significant part in persuading him.

Illegals are just that, illegals. Country of origin doesn't matter at all.

 

Was thinking that Obama is part Irish.

 

Well the portion about Ryan supporting amnesty is right I was just unaware that it would benefit anyone other than those who have come across the southern border.

 

Name a country and there are some illegals here from that country.

 

I don't believe they should be treated any differently. But I was very involved in the Irish-American community for a few years and it was my experience that the difference between Irish illegals and Mexican border criminals is that the Irish just come for a couple of years and then go back.

Of all the Irish guys I knew, only a couple of them stayed.

The Mexicans, on the other hand, come and stay. They never bother to learn the language or assimilate. They just come to collect welfare and turn our country into the same armpit they just left.

Most of the Irish guys I knew just came over to work for a couple of years, make a little money, party, and then go back. To all the ones I knew, it was more like an extended Spring Break than actual immigration.

So, while they're both illegal and they should both be prosecuted, I don't have contempt for the Irish the way I do for the Mexicans, because I know the Irish aren't doing it to be malicious.
