Every Man Dies Alone, by Hans Falada is one of the most powerful books I have read. Powerful and disturbing as it graphically described mans inhumanity to man. Originally published in Germany in 1947 it was not translated and published in English until 2009.

Based on the true experience of a couple who lived in Berlin during the Nazi era it is the story of a working-class Berlin couple who took on the Third Reich with a postcard campaign intended to foment rebellion against Hitler’s Germany. You can guess how this turns out. This is a must read for anyone interested in history and who want to learn more of this dark era in human history. There are few books in English that give an accurate picture of what life was like for civilians living in Germany during the Nazi era.
