I want to know what version of the bible is most commonly used by the people here.
There's posts I'd love to respond to, but it's very hard because we're all using different translations. Does anyone else find this frustrating?
Is there any way possible that we could all list what we use and then all agree to use the one that most people have, no matter what that is?
It seems like it would make discussing things with others so much easier if we all could at least be quoting the same scriptures.

If you all think this is a horrid idea just say so.

KJV, NIV, NAS, NKJV, Alexandrian LXX and a couple of interlinears. I tend to quote from the NIV the most because the language is so clear, but I try to make sure that when there is an alternate meaning for a word or phrase, I mention it.

I prefer the ASV above all other translations. So much of my scripture memory started in youth was in KJV, though, so that continues to be where I can lookup and memorize verses best.

I have sixteen different versions on
my computer desk. Three of those versions
are King James Versions. I get mixed messages
as to which is the King James Bible.

It should be enough that people quote
their source as is academically and
legally required. Here is an example:

I.Corinthians XIII:12 (KJV1611):

Euen so ye, forasmuch as yee are
zealous +of spirituall gifts, seeke that yee
may excell to the edifying of the Church.

Sidenote: + Gr. of spirits

I.Corinthians XIII:12 (KJV1611, 2ed best):

Euen so ye, forasmuch as yee are
zealous of spirits, seeke that yee
may excell to the edifying of the Church.

Short Answer: KJB = King James Bible

Long, sarcastic answer:
Obviously you don't wade in the mainstream
of IFB = Independant Fundamental Baptist.
For some who do wade there get drowned
in the KJVO = King James Version Only,
movement. KJVOs call the KJV the KJB.
There seem to be two groups:

1. Those who say the actual KJV1611
is satan's spawn (so only the KJV1769 is
the KJB).

2. Those who say there is no difference
between the KJV1611, KJV1769, and KJV1873
so each of these three books on my desk
is the KJB.

Have 6 translations in QuickVerse + Strongs & NAS concordance.

Generally use NIV & cross reference with KJV. Usually post verses from both when questioning something....And then get in trouble from NASo....

I most often us the NASB. It's what I grew up with, and what I am used to. Lots of times I sort of quote from memory and sometimes I do sort of a half memory, half translation, half paraphrase, but usually those are loose enough that I assume people reading know that.

S.Iohn III:16 (KJV1611):

For God so loued y world, that
he gaue his only begotten Sonne : that
whosoeuer beleeueth in him, should
not perish, but haue euerlasting life.

If your Bible doesn't read like this,
then it is something other than the KJV1611.

An Arminian

I agree with Calvin on four of his five points:

1. Total Depravity

2. Unconditional Election

3. Limited Atonement

5. Eternal Security

I do NOT agree with Calvin on:

4. Irresistible Grace
The elect WILL respond to the call of grace.

I believe those human beans who respond to the call of
grace are the elect in the church age
(this age, this dispensation)

Hopefully others are still going to respond, and then we'll see where we're at with what version most people in this section of the forum use!

The version anyone chooses to use does not change what the early manuscripts say. The versions we have in English are all translations, and subject in part to the choices the translators have made in accord with the knowledge they have.

Arguing about versions is a useless waste of time, especially when the net lets us compare so many and offers free concordances to help us along in serious Bible study.

Arguing over the English words chosen when we can do much better than that is silly.
