How do they know if the answer was correct?

Passwords are typically stored in encrypted form. A typical computer, using a mathematical formula, can encrypt a password in an instant. When you type in the password, your password is encrypted and compared to the encrypted password on file. But, to go backwards, and find the clear password from the encrypted password could take a typical computer thousands of years.

I'll take your word for it. Thanks.
