Exegesis and hermeneutics

    Question for the experts.

    Read the two statements below and tell me if they are right. Thank you for your help.

    1. Exegesis asks the question “what does it say?”

    2. Biblical hermeneutics asks the question “what does it mean?”

    I always understood biblical hermeneutics as the science of interpretation, so exegesis would naturally its handmaid.

    Exegesis is more specific; dealing with the words, grammar, syntax, context, and literary structure. Hermenuetics is the integration of the exegesis with biblical theology, sytematic theology, and historical theology.
