NOVELTY pig calendars and toys have been banned from a council office — in case they offend Muslim staff.
Workers in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, were told to remove or cover up all pig-related items, including toys, porcelain figures, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.
Bosses acted after a Muslim complained about pig-shaped stress relievers delivered to the council in the run-up to the Islamic festival of Ramadan.
Muslims are barred from eating pork in the Koran and consider pigs unclean.
Councillor Mahbubur Rahman, a practising Muslim, backed the ban. He said: “It’s a tolerance of people’s beliefs.”

We probably need to treat these acts of banning differently, depending on whether the agency doing the banning is a private company or a government agency. I would think that it is entirely within the rights of a private company to implement whatever constraints it wants on the "free speech" rights of its employees. When I work for company X I do not lose my right of free speech. I can loudly pronounce "company X sucks" to a group of prospective clients.

If I am not engaging in slander, then I have broken no law. I can, of course, be legally fired by my employer. Same deal with the "pigs". If the company bans any novelty "pig" stuff, I can fill my office with pigs and still not break any law. Again, the company can fire me for that.

With a government office, things are not so clear. One could argue that, in its role as a government agency, the right to freely display "pigs" should be preserved. On the other hand, it is perfectly legal (where I live in Ontario) for women to go topless. Should government offices restrict women from exercizing that right at work just because it offends some people? I am not sure.

I agree that a private company should be able to set up any rules for employment they deem fit. (They're not; they have to meet racial quotas, etc.)

However, with the government office, it's "Free Speech!" until that free speech offends a politically protected group.

It's "separation of church and state!" until it comes to a politically protected religion.

Should women who are legally entitled to be topless be allowed to exercize that right as employees in a government office? If not, on what basis? I would think that if pigs should not be banned simply because they are offensive to Muslims, bare breats should not be banned because they are offensive to Muslims or Christians or whoever....

An outright ban all pig memorbilia is quite ridiculous, however, did anyone else read why someone complained. A pig toy is one thing, handing out "pig stress relievers" to staff before the Islamic festival of Ramadan is another. Honestly, no matter how much stress they were under they could have chosen any other shaped stress reliever than a pig. Sheesh, it's not like relations between muslims and "others" in this country are not bad enough already. Why do something to purposefully offend another? People need to learn when they do something stupid to assert their beliefs or annoyance with others, there are going to be consequences, whether they are right or wrong. It's like anywhere else. Some people can end up ruining things for everyone else.

AMSTERDAM, 27/04/07 - A school in Amsterdam has halted lessons on rural life because the Islamic children refused to talk about pigs. Reporting this, Alderman Lodewijk Asscher said he wants to take "tough measures." Subsidies for all kinds of dubious groups must stop and parents of unruly children penalised financially.

Asscher told newspaper De Volkskrant: "A primary school in Amsterdam-Noord has decided no longer to teach about living on a farm. Various pupils began to demolish the classroom when the pig came up for discussion. Apparently it has gone that far. These children, 9, 10 years old, have not been given even the most elementary rules at home about why they must go to school."

Asscher, who is also the Labour (PvdA) leader in Amsterdam, wants to subject the parents to an 'upbringing requirement,' enforced with negative financial spurs. He is thinking of cuts in the children's allowance or lower welfare payments. In the Lower House, Youth and Family Minister Rouvoet recently rejected a plea for this from Party for Freedom (PVV).

Motive has nothing to do with it. The person who complained saw pig shaped stress relievers delivered to employees in the run-up to Ramadan. The only thing taken into account is how awkward this looks and how offended people were. It is a classic example, right or wrong, of how the stupidity of some results in lesser for all. Common sense is a gift the good Lord did not see fit to bestow on all of mankind.

I have an acquaintance who is an atheist.

He doesn't have a problem with Bible classes in school.

He never had a problem opting out of them.

He should serve as an example of "common sense", at least in this respect.

If you notice I said that from the start. It is ridiculous. Funny thing is people say the same thing about us every time one Christian group or another takes issue with the most insignificant things. Case in point the big Proctor and Gamble boycott of the late 80's early 90's. There are many more that can be listed. Unfortunately muslims do not own the market on hypersensitivety. That onus is on all societal groups. We are all offended by something.
