    Grace and peace, to all you theological powerhouses...

    I would love to jump in to this whirlpool of doctrine but I know nil about where to begin. They don't really push Reformation theology at my seminary (we're tree-hugging, process theology-reading heretics [IMG] ). It would be swell if I could get a relatively unbiased and brief summary of the Calvin and Arminius positions, as well as perhaps a summary of the "most-argued" points in this forum. An F.A.Q., perhaps.

    Thanks,

    YD

    Why is this funny? Also, are you sure you want C vs. A material? Wouldn't you rather read Al Gore's commentary on Biblical Ethics and Ghandi's interpretation of John 1:1-18?

    Are you dreaming?? I am the only one around here that is unbiased [IMG] But I don't have time to answer right now. Going out to call the elect in.

    There was a recent thread with some of this in it in another forum I think though it may have been transferred here. If anyone remembers it, perhaps they could post a link to it.

    For the Calvinist side, I would recommend www.bbcmpls.org. Click on Who We Are in the upper left, then click on Doctrinal Distinctives at the top, then click on What We Believe about the Five Points of Calvinism (TULIP) in the middle of the page.

    unbiased and brief ? Well, I've had 300 plus posts and that means you'll just have to go over each one of 'em. :D :D
    Seriously, I think the most argued point would be on how sovereign really is God. Just take a look.
    Then the next most argued would probably be is man able to come to God on his own (translation: is there an innate goodness in man that will cause him to seek God with no help from the Holy Spirit ?).

    Why is this funny? </font>[/QUOTE]Because it's a gross exaggeration. Disciples of Christ are not big on doctrine ("no creed but Christ") so we end up being theologically diverse. Some are tree-huggers, some are not.

    As one who is open to new ideas, I reserve my right to be interested even in that which I may not agree with. I hope not to offend you by doing so.

    &gt;&gt;&gt;First, Calvinism and Arminianism has nothing really to do with John Calvin or Jacob Hermann (Ariminius) sort of speak.

    They are terms to define doctrinal theology. The men themselves were well known as learned men of these doctrines. So the theologies are commonly named after them (normally the names, like many Christian group names, were originally created to be derogatory terms by their opponents).

    &gt;&gt;&gt;Calvinism in its pure sense has far better names such as;

    Doctrines of Grace
    Doctrines of Election
    Sovereign Grace
    Reformed Theology
    Free Grace...among many more that don't come to mind right now.

    &gt;&gt;&gt;Many, including myself, do not like the term Calvinism because what it can imply therefore they will not call themselves Calvinists. And many people will not allow others to call them Calvinists.

    &gt;&gt;&gt;The core principles can be found in the historic statements of faith;

    Synod of Dord 1619
    1644 London Confession
    Westminster Confession 1646
    1689 London Confession
    Abstract Of Principles (Southern Baptist Theological Seminary 1858 )

    &gt;&gt;&gt;A popular acrostic of the Doctrines of Grace is TULIP...

    Total Depravity of man
    Unconditional Election
    Limited Atonement
    Irresistible Grace
    Perseverance (or Preservation) of the saints

    &gt;&gt;&gt;You will also see a lot of exegesis on terms such as...

    Regeneration
    Conversion
    Justification
    Sanctification
    Glorification

    &gt;&gt;&gt;Some Famous Baptists that preached the doctrines of grace;

    John Gill
    Arthur Pink
    Charles Spurgeon

    All this stuff, as mentioned before, is all over the web.

    &gt;&gt;&gt;For a overview of TULIP; there a small book called "TULIP, The five points of calvinism in the light of scripture" by Duane Edward Spencer.

    It is a comparative analysis of Calvinism and Arminianism from a Calvinistic perspective. Its a small yellow book. It's short and sweet and not a heavy read. And cheap! Only 10 bucks in my neck of the woods.

    &gt;&gt;&gt;Always keep in mind, there are various groups that are in agreement with the Doctrines of Grace but there are always other issues that these groups don't agree on (baptism, Communion, church government, etc).

    Young Disciple,

    Norman Geisler's "Chosen But Free" Bethany House Publishers and Robert Shank's "Elect In The Son" Bethany House Publishers is another great book that will offer to the reader the counterdistinction to Extreme Calvinism.
