I have been studying through Romans and found a book I have from F.F. Bruce. I have never read anything from him and was curious what anyone here knows about this author. Thanks.

Now I'm confused....according to Amy, we are not supposed to waste our time reading books....rather focusing all our attention on the Bible? now you want to read a book.....help me to understand this pretzel logic!

F.F. Bruce was a British theologian who died some time in the 1990s, I think. He was a lecturer in the N.T. at Manchester University if memory serves. He was a member of the Plymouth Brethren, which makes him unusual as a theologian. His book on Romans is quite well thought of, though I would say he isn't as good as Hendricksen or Murray. He wrote many other books. I have The Spreading Flame, a book on early Church history.

It has been a long time since I read anything by F.F. Bruce, but I always found his writings very instructive. He was born in Scotland and is considered one of the founders of the modern evangelical understanding of the Bible. His book New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? us considered a classic. He wrote over 40 books and was the editor of The Evangelical Quarterly.

The late F.F. Bruce was professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis, University of Manchester, England. He was an Open Brethren and sound theology in that brand of thinking. I have 24 of his books and wouldn't hesitate to recommend his writing.
Open Brethren are a group in England out of the original Plymouth Brethren (J.N. Darby, C.I. Scofield).
He held some viewpoints I would disagree with, but nothing that wouldn't fit into many evangelical viewpoints of the premillennial persuasion.

Salty, Not a question of leaving the PB's.just belonged to a different branch,,a little more open. For instance, the PB's are strict dispensationalists, and F.F.Bruce was a post tribulationist and not dispensationalist. He supported the idea of women in ministry, where PB's did not.
Like any author, differences to the norm will show up, but nothing that affects evangelical theology. I like his writing. I liked him!

I do not own 24 books by Dr. Bruce, but one of my Bible Dictionaries, "New Bible Dictionary, Second Edition was edited in part by Dr. Bruce. It is a tad liberal for my taste, but certainly scholarly and full of sound observation based on scripture rather than speculation. I would not recommend it as your only Bible Dictionary but certainly as one of them.
FF Bruce was an outstanding theologian and one of the top NT scholars during his heyday. In my library I have about fifteen of his texts and often relying on his sound exegesis when doing significant textual work.
You're benefited by reading him. Though some of his volumes are slim the volume of work he did in preparing wasn't thin. There is rarely a word on the page which hasn't received the utmost attention and contemplation.
In other words, I'm a fan.
I'm a qualified fan of F.F.Bruce myself. I am from an Open Brethren background and have respected his scholarship and godliness. I've owned a number of his books. As such a scholar as he was he did not have a doctorate --but he more than qualified for one many times over.
In college I would go to the archives and pour over the Evangelical Quarterly and read his articles and those of other men who really dug into Scripture for our benefit.He died in 1990. It seems so long ago and yet so recent.

would say that all long as you rrealise that he had adopted the modern 'critical" thinking of say Fuller seminary, as being "limited" inerrancy/infallibility...
can still profit from his books, as he was easy to read, and did do a nice job on getting the flesh from the biblical skeleton!
