Jewelry anywhere on the face whether considered the ears are facial or not, are their any specifics in the Bible to their origin, and whether they should be adorned by Christians?

Should facial jewelry be adorned by Christians? Good question.

It seems jewelry was commonly worn in Moses' day. They gave jewelry (among other things) as an offering in this passage.

These truly "were" traditional adornings of that day, but they were also given as a sacrifice of offering for the making of the Tabernacle, not only jewelry, but also cunning work and craftsmanship to build the Tabernacle.

Is this example in Exodus 35 one to follow in this present day as maintaining the Tabernacle in splendor and glory? We see the children of Israel making this sacrifice, but then we see Joseph beforehand in Egypt as second only to Pharoah wearing nose rings and bracelets and the such. Also, we see the children of Israel, in the absence of Moses while he was on Sinai communing with the LORD, making sacrifice by melting them down and Aaron forming a golden calf as an idol.

There are definite implications here in these referenced passages and are extremely pertinant to holy living and God's instructed sacrifice, which in turn becomes obedience. This would also clarify that the LORD would rather us obey than merely make sacrifice.

Many will make the attempt to accuse legalism here. This may help clarify something for those who will, or won't, but we could all agree with the command of the LORD to be holy as He is holy, that is, if we believe the Bible as the word of God. I do!

Rebekah got engaged with a nose ring ... how's that for tradition???

Genesis 24:47 "Then I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him'; and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.

And what part of those verses address ear rings or nose rings?

Daughter has earrings (stainless steel studs, $4.00 American). Cannot figure how to twist Paul's writing here to condemn her!  [IMG]

Nose ring is only a supposition,

Genesis 24:47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said,
the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him:
and I put the "earring" upon her face, and the bracelets upon her
    hands.

    Strong's {5141} µz,n, — nexem, neh'-zem; from an unused root of uncertain
    meaning; a nose-ring: — earring, jewel.

John Gill Expositor "a jewel for the forehead"; or, as some render it, a "nose jewel" {y}; and so in # Ge 24:47, "an earring upon her face", or "nose"; and this was a jewel that hung from the forehead upon a lace or ribbon between the eyes down upon the nose; and such the daughters of Sion wore in later times, # Isa 3:21

Also in Genesis 24:22 the servant of Abraham is said to have an "earring" of half a shekel", for the intended bride for Isaac.

So I don't believe when we, today, refer to a nose ring, we are talking about the same thing in Genesis 24. Nose rings today are either the stud type for pierced ears or the type for pulling a bull by the snout. I don't see any justification for a nose ring today on a Christian or not. (Unless you're full of bull, and need to be led around by the snout!) [IMG]

I don't see any harm in wearing jewery, if it is not for show, and so long as your not loaded down with it so's thats all people have to look at when talking to you.

Remember the wheat and the tares grow together, lets be witnessess of God's glory, not weed pullers!!

I'm vaguely familiar with the parable of the wheat and tares. Would you explain what exactly you're saying?

I realize that. I was making a little joke. It is a reasonable argument made though.

I don't either. I think public body piercing besides ears are about making a cultural statement, a statement that is not appropriate for a believer to make.

Isn't all jewelry worn for the sole purpose of bringing attention to that particular area of the body? I agree today's body piercing is a "cultural" statement, but much of that is not on the facial area.

Facial jewelry is worn, or I should say adorned, so that the beauty of the countenance is to be observed, bringing attention to certain features of the face, also to enhance any less desirable feature as more attractive than without.

I don't believe a woman is to be shamedfaced by remaining "plain" faced. She is the ornament of beauty in a man's life, and should be adorned so as to reflect the care that man has for his bride.

    I Peter 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

These verses don't say the wife shouldn't be adorned outwardly, but her inner beauty is to be far more exemplified than anything she wears outwardly. Also that "hidden man of the heart" will be reflected by the way she adorns herself outwardly: a meek and quiet spirit.

I Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array

If we take this verse in the context it is written, each item would be directly related to the last words, "costly array", indicating the exploitation of modesty mentioned in the first part of this verse. Not that she shouldn't wear any jewelry, but that she shouldn't wear it as to be overbearing in her appearance.( Poor Tammy Faye Baker, and Jan Crouch, if they only believed the Bible)

What about men? Should a man wear an earing or anything like it on his face?

Jewelry, especially rings were a form of currency.

Ear rings, nose rings, finger rings, pinky rings, other places rings... A measure of safety.

While being worn they are difficult to remove without the owner taking note.

How about another interesting question for you facial jewelry advocates....what about earrings on men? Would you or your church allow a man who was saved to have an earring and serve in your church ministry (usher, officer, deacon, pastor, etc.)? ;)

People wearing earrings, nose rings, eyebrow rings are welcome anytime, anyplace, in any type of service that they are gifted for. Deacon, usher, preacher whatever. I find myself more interested in what they have to say then what they are wearing. Now would I ever get one nope, way to chicken, afraid of the dire consequences of sneezing!

I think their "wearing earrings, nose rings, eyebrow rings " says enough, and they need to be listening instead of talking!

I don't get the "Now would I ever get one nope, way to chicken, afraid of the dire consequences of sneezing!" bit, it must be a "leftcoast" thing.

The sneezing comment was an attempt at humor. Can you imagine sneezing with a metal stud in your nose, possible dire consequences for sure

Ricky: Since you are against women wearing earrings (because they are adorning the outside); are you also then against women wearing make-up?

Using your logic about wearing earrings to attract attention to that part of the body...then using make-up would be wrong also.

What is your take on women wearing perfume then, that certainly attracts attention! Do you consider that wrong too?

To take it one step further; is it wrong for a woman to curl her hair?

    Am I understanding you correctly?

Hi Sue, I cut and pasted this from the earlier post from page 1 that I made concerning what you ask: Facial jewelry is worn, or I should say adorned, so that the beauty of the countenance is to be observed, bringing attention to certain features of the face, also to enhance any less desirable feature as more attractive than without.

I don't know how to tell you the post #, but if you'll back-track to the first page with this portion in italics you'll also see what I said concerning other scriptures that many take out of context failing to sum up the interpetation of wearing gold, plaiting the hair, etc. I belive every old barn needs a fresh coat of paint and of course some deodorizer! When I took the interim pastorate (just a few weeks left in that ministry) I met a former colleague of mine from the 3rd Infantry Regiment where I was his sergeant. He was a hard-drinking and worldly man.

Now . . eight years have passed and I meet him at church. Shorts, polo shirt, earrings, and 9-10 tatoos. I was dumbfounded to see him in church and asked if he was visiting (I was the new guy there and thought I'd witness to him).

No, said he had gotten saved. 4 years of bible study and in-depth discipleship . . and he was the Sunday School Superintendent and leader of Children's Church!
