Their point is that "works" refers only to works of the Mosaic Covenant and not good deeds. We are saved by faith and not by observing the 613 statements plus Mishnah.

As Paul states in Galatians: "Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision (ie the 'works of Torah' or the lack thereof) avails anything, but a faith working through love." (Gal 5:6)
