Falwell Obtains Namesake Website from Critic

    (Lynchburg, Virginia-AP) -- The Reverend Jerry Falwell has
    obtained a namesake Internet site previously owned by one of his
    critics.
    Typing www.jerryfalwell.com into your Web browser now takes
    you to Falwell ministries instead of the Falwell parody that once
    ran on the Web site.
    An Illinois man, Gary Cohn, has used the Web site to
    lampoon the Lynchburg minister. Falwell has been trying to get
    the domain name from Cohn for two years, but a federal judge in
    Lynchburg ruled a year ago that he didn't have jurisdiction over
    an Illinois web site.
    Falwell threatened to sue again in Illinois. But he says
    Cohn's lawyers informed him last week that their client would
    turn over the domain name.

    I like Falwell.

    I don't like that he's always trying to sell you something, that's why I quit listening to James Kennedy and Hank Hannegraff, but I think Falwell has a lot of good things to say.

    Joshua, I agree! Sometimes those from the more wacky side of the spectrum become their own self parody.

    Well Bro. Joshua and Colorado, I agree. I'm not much for these t.v. type preachers. Many of them seem to be putting on a show to increase viewers.

    Believe it or not, I used to watch Rod Parsley when he was first on t.v. I had no idea what denomination he leaned toward back then. He was on fire..... but then his true leaning came forth and I forthwith departed! LOL

    Diane, Parsley is something, isn't he? LOL

    I believe people like that drive more people away from Christianity than just about anything else.

    Will somebody please tell me about Falwell? There seems to be a lot of controversy about him. What are some of the specific problems with his doctrine or his behavior?

    Gina, I don't know much about him because I don't care for his style. Too 'Carnival Barker' style for me.

    I know he took a stand against something on t.v. a year or so ago and then 'changed his stance' later to keep from getting a lot of heat. Maybe that's what you're thinking of. Again, I don't watch him so I can't give you a good answer. Mine is just a matter of preference of style.

    Gina, I don't think you would have any problem with his doctrine. He would be in sync with most conservative Baptists on that score, strong on the fundamentals of the faith.

    Falwell gets criticism from a few different quarters:

    --Political liberals would strongly object to Falwell's outspokenly conservative political views. Falwell was the head of the "Moral Majority" several years ago, and his opponents saw him as a self-righteous, holier-than-thou who was trying to foist his political and religious conservatism on America

    --Extreme IFB'ers object to Falwell aligning himself with the Southern Baptist Convention, and are critical of the "worldliness" at his college, Liberty University, which is the alma mater of (among others) Christian rock/rap group dcTAlk

    --Some just average Christians who would agree with Jerry politically and on Biblical issues are put off by the fact that he does tend to come across on his TV programs as always trying to hawk something in the time-honored tradition of TV-evangelists [​IMG] . I am put off by that as well, but I think he's essentially a good man who is doctrinally sound.

    Thanks Cindy! It almost sounds like people have the same problems with him as they do with evangelist Tim Lee. That's sad. :(

    Well I certainly don't have a problem with his doctrine (as I know it even tho he does speak on some Charismatic shows occassionally) and goodness knows I'm probably considered a raging conservative and a moral majority (majority??) member but Cindy's right... it's the presentation that doesn't sit right with me. I also don't like the t.v. preacher's who stop during their sermons to sell books, tapes, etc.

    I used to listen to Dr. Tony Evans every day on the radio. I could only pick him up at 3:00 on the A.M. radio station out of Toccoa Falls College so I'd put Nick in his car seat and go for a ride. Little Nick got so used to it that he'd holler out... 'Preach it Tony!' Now Dr. Evan's show is supposedly geared toward African American families but I found it to be very family appropriate and inspiring! His voice is too high pitched for my liking but his message is dead on!

    His message is a great one but I can't stand it when people shout at me.

    I'd listen to him if he'd just learn to talk in a normal voice.

    LOL Mike... I was raised on Bible thumping, foot stomping preachers who preached Hell Fire and Damnation.... :eek: Tony's mild compared to that! In fact, I prefer a loud preacher.

    That's OK, Diane. There's nothing wrong with it. It's just not my thing.

    My stepmother used to drag me to these bapticostal tent revivals where the preachers would do that and I used to hate it. I remember listening to them thinking, "are they afraid that nobody will listen to them if they don't yell"?

    Ironically, even though I don't like that, one of my favorite things in the world is watching Larry Bowa freak out at home plate. I got to see that from about twenty five feet away yesterday. How'd you like to have him for a preacher? ;)

    My brother in law has season tickets that he gives to his clients about four rows behind the Phillies' dugout so the whole thing unfolded right in front of us.

    Bowa's not normally a dirt kicker. I thought that added a nice Pinella-esque touch to it.

    I don't know how he'd be as a preacher but he'd sure be a lot of fun in deacon's meetings.
