New Zealand bars British man's 'fat' wife

    By Paul Chapman in Wellington
    Last Updated: 1:24am GMT 18/11/2007

    EXCERPT

A British man who moved to New Zealand has been told by officials that his wife is too fat to join him.

Richie Trezise, 35, a rugby-playing Welshman, lost weight to gain entry to New Zealand after being rejected for being overweight and a potential burden on the health care system.

    I wonder if they bar
    people with cancer
    diabetes
    people who smoke
people who abuse drugs, either legal or illegal
    alcohol drinkers
    arthritis suffers
and just about any chronic aliment, as these are most certainly a burden on the health care system, not potential.

    I suppose so.

But if they don't it'll be like getting a driver's license. Pass the exam, then drive recklessly.

What I know is the VA has me on a weight control program, it has gotten so bad with me. It is my fault for not eating correctly. I might as well laugh about it.

As far as the New Zealand issue, they are a sovereign nation, and have the right to establish their own rules for immigrating to their country. With all the hand wringing we as Americans have done over illegal immigration lately, we hardly have the right to dictate rules to another country.

It's already here even without universal health care. Insurance companies turn down anyone they want to.
I know, we've been through it as self employed business owners.

    Ahhh. Not exactly.

One of the hazards of being self employed with too few employees to form a group.

But I believe you are offered considerable tax breaks to self insure. Another option is a high deductible plan that increases the chances you will be accepted with pre existing conditions. The money you set aside to cover your deductible is not just tax deductible, but a direct reduction in taxable income.

We don't bar over weight people from entering our country, that is discrimination. And thats an ugly thing.

For all of our flaws, I will bet you our country has produced individuals with more depth and contribution than Crocodile Dundee.

....urm and the system discriminates against the poor or the chronically ill, is that okay......? I find the whole concept of health systems being forced into an economic model at odds with CARE, medicine is just a product one buys if one can afford it....too bad if you can't do so.........this is not neccesarily a diatribe at the American system, I work in the Australian private system which seems to follow the American model largely
