    Robert Edward Lee

Christian character and conscience of conviction.

  3. So many to name...I have to say (and this will not gain much respect from many) that I greatly admire Robert E. Lee. The man was not only quite probably the best general this country has ever known (graduated with 0 demarits from West Point and the highest GPA to date) but he was also a righteous man who faithfully served his local parish St. John's Episcopal church in Richmond VA, released his slaves several years before the Civil War and was the first to accept communion with an African American after the Civil War.

Hard to choose....sooooooo many great Americans!

Ummm, George Washington Carver. He was a Christian (from what I've read), a great inspiration of what someone can do with their life, and I think a great practical scientist.

    My head?
James Madison. The wisest of the founders, the man who made our Constitution the great document it is.

    My heart?
Abraham Lincoln, the man who held the nation together, and personally suffered with his people, both north and south.

If he had lived, the South would have recovered much sooner.

Ronald Reagan for have the moral clarity and courage to stand up against the Evil Empire and free millions of people from tyranny in Europe and the Soviet Union. In so doing, he also rejected Kissinger's policy of detente and brought the tyranny to an end and protected the national security of the United States and the world.

    Several years before 1776,

The Lord used John Clarke to start the First Baptist Church in the Colonies at Newport, Rhode Island, 1638.

A couple that come to mind.

    1) George S. Patton- A Sherman like understanding of what the nature of war is. A unique ability to read a situation and react and a unique disability in that he couldn't be political or play the game. He was always himself. He was the only allied general the Germans feared and if we had given him the resources he asked for. The war would have ended in October or November of 1944 with the Americans taking Berlin. How different the cold war would have been if the border between East and west had been the Vistula and the Danube.

    2) Ronald Reagan- When I was coming of age Reagan was president. His presidency to me is the memory of a better time. His memory tells me that, that time could be again.

    3) Teddy Roosevelt - He walked inside and outside of government with equal grace and charisma.

    4) Ty Cobb One of the meanest and harshest men America has produced. Also very brilliant. Made millions by investing in Coca Cola. When asked in the early how he would do against the pitchers of that day he said "I'd hit .275" When the questioner asked him if the pitchers of that day were that much better he said "No.......I'm 72 years old."

This has long been a bone of controversy and is not easily settled. Come on over to the Baptist History forum if you want to talk further.

I'd have to second all those. But, I would add my personal favorite: Nathan B. Forrest - probably the most brilliant military mind in history. A man who struggled most of his life with sin and finally repented and came to his Lord very late in life. To me, he is "real" and not the typical bigger-than-life character that some heroes have become.
