    I am sure this has probably been asked before, but please humor me, if you don't mind. [IMG]

    I'm kinda new to "music ministry" and I was hoping to get some ideas about what hymns people really liked. I am particularly interested in hymns that are also suited for solos. I am open to hymns, old or new, or even more contemporary songs. They just need to be available (like in a standard hymnal) and suited for accompaniment with piano or organ. I'll give my short list:

    The Solid Rock ("My hope is built...")
    Holy Holy Holy
    All The Way My Savior Leads Me
    Abide With Me
    What Wondrous Love Is This

    Faith of our Fathers
    Stand up for Jesus
    Standing on the promises
    Majesty
    Great is they Faithfulness
    Onward Christian Soldiers
    A mighty fortress
    A new name in Glory
    On the Jericho road
    All Hail the power of Jesus Name
    Battle hymm of the Republic
    Because HE lives
    Behold the Lamb
    Beneath the Cross
    Christ receiveth sinful men
    Crown him with many crowns
    Eternal Father strong to save
    Faith is the Victory

    I could go on with a major list, but why don't you consider the Gaither Music Hymnal titled "Worship His Majesty"? There are 711 selections contained in it ranging from Sunday School favorites to High worship, from Sunday "meeting on the grounds" gospel to High and Holy worship, from small country church to great metropolitan Cathedral.

    It is a compilation of favorites from all over America, compiled and approved by Bill and Gloria Gaither, who have traveled extensively as both performers and producers of Wonderful Heart warming concerts that have included many of the works contained in the hymm book.

    If you are looking for "hymns" (rather than psalms or spiritual songs) stick with the first 100 pages or less in most hymnals.

    After that they leave being "hymns" (worship of God) and become just songs of praise and testimony (me-centric).

    Be Thou My Vision has a great message, and sounds wonderful as a solo, and is still as beautiful even with no music.

    Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior is another good solo that has a sweet sound when sung with a simple piano arrangement, good for a female alto who can comfortably move up a bit...

    Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent is a powerful song that is best done as a solo by a tenor male. There's a great version done by Fernando Ortega with the accompaniment being very light and simple guitar and piano, but it would still work with simple piano. You gotta hear him sing it though when you have a moment to sit in quiet revery.

    Those are my opinions. [IMG]

    At the age of 23 George Beverly Shea (1909 - ) had a hard decision to make. He could accept a job offer in a secular singing position in New York City with a great salary and wide respect; or he could continue singing in churches and for Christian radio programs. While sitting at the family piano, he started to prepare a special hymn for the Sunday service. On the piano he found a poem by Mr. Rhea F. Miller. He immediately began to compose the music for the poem and used the song that same morning in his father's church service. He also used those words to direct his life and has shared his song, "I'd Rather Have Jesus" with audiences around the world.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
    I'd rather be His than have riches untold;
    I'd rather have Jesus than houses or land;
    I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand:
    refrain:
    Than to be the king of a vast domain or be held in sin's dread sway!
    I'd rather have Jesus than anything this world affords today.
    I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause;
    I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;
    I'd rather have Jesus than world-wide fame;
    I'd rather be true to His holy name:
    He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
    He's sweeter than honey from out the comb;
    He's all that my hungering spirit needs -
    I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead:
    Nothing but the Blood
    To God be the Glory
    He Touched Me
    There is a Fountain Filled With Blood
    Higher Ground
    Jesus is all the World to Me
    Jesus is Coming
    my all time favorite, though, is:
    Trust and Obey
    When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
    What a glory He sheds on our way!
    While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
    And with all who will trust and obey.
    Refrain
    Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
    To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
    Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
    But His smile quickly drives it away;
    Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
    Can abide while we trust and obey.
    Refrain
    Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
    But our toil He doth richly repay;
    Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
    But is blessed if we trust and obey.
    Refrain
    But we never can prove the delights of His love
    Until all on the altar we lay;
    For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
    Are for them who will trust and obey.
    Refrain
    Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet.
    Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
    What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
    Never fear, only trust and obey.
    Refrain
    That song just brings me to my knees. I don't know how else to describe it.
    In Christian love.
    Dear Lord And Father of Mankind
    Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
    Forgive our foolish ways;
    Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
    In purer lives Thy service find,
    In deeper reverence, praise.
    In simple trust like theirs who heard,
    Beside the Syrian sea,
    The gracious calling of the Lord,
    Let us, like them, without a word,
    Rise up and follow Thee.
    O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
    O calm of hills above,
    Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
    The silence of eternity,
    Interpreted by love!
    With that deep hush subduing all
    Our words and works that drown
    The tender whisper of Thy call,
    As noiseless let Thy blessing fall
    As fell Thy manna down.
    Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
    Till all our strivings cease;
    Take from our souls the strain and stress,
    And let our ordered lives confess
    The beauty of Thy peace.
    Breathe through the heats of our desire
    Thy coolness and Thy balm;
    Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
    Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
    O still, small voice of calm.
    I really appreciate everyone’s input (don’t stop). [IMG]
    It really helps me to focus on particular songs when I know they are “special” to others. Obviously, everyone here has exceptional taste in music. I like all kinds, especially if they are God honoring and poetical.
    I find these songs on the net and listen to them. Some of these y’all have listed, I haven’t heard in years. I don’t know enough about music to just look at them in the hymnal and recognize them.
    Most of these are just so absolutely beautiful! The problem is that they probably would not be heard in my church, unless I “find” them and figure out how to sing them!
    I guess its really more an opportunity than a problem. [IMG]
