As I like to do once a year, I polled the church members for the their favorite 3 songs. Not necessarily hymns, but songs we had used in worship (congregationally). I then used these over the next couple of weeks in worship. I thought it might be interesting to you to see the results of the poll. This is the top 20 on the list... and this would likely change somewhat over the course of time.

    1. How Great Thou Art
    2. Amazing Grace
    3. The Old Rugged Cross
    4. You Are Holy (Prince of Peace)
    5. Victory in Jesus
    6. At Calvary
    7. Holy Ground
    8. How Deep the Father's Love for Us
    9. I Can Only Imagine
    10. In Christ Alone
    11. In the Garden
    12. Open the Eyes of My Heart
    13. Shout to the Lord
    14. Standing on the Promises
    15. At the Cross
    16. Here I Am to Worship
    17. Holy, Holy, Holy
    18. I Bowed on My Knees and Cried, "Holy"
    19. What a Friend We Have in Jesus
    20. When We All Get to Heaven

I thought it was interesting how many "newer" songs made it on the list, considering that most of my church is older. Guess that just goes to show that the traditional/contemporary debate is not based on age. Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

Joshua, you did very well getting a response out of them [IMG] At old Church now and then instead of picking songs myself I would just ask for favourites...and the silence was almost always deafening  [IMG]

    Pete,

This was an actual printed survey. You might try that. I told them from the pulpit that the box was in the foyer of the church, and if they wanted to "exercise their right to vote" they were welcome to write their favorite 3 songs on the survey in their bulletin and turn it in. Then I tabulated the votes (no pregnant chads allowed) and worked on the worship service for the week. I was pretty impressed that thematically, scripturally and key-wise, it worked really well. I love my church!

Anyway, Pete, you may give that a whirl and see if they respond better. Just an idea.

The English-side/Senior pastor at JBC, Dr. Paul Aita, has done extensive research in the past year into the congregation's favorite hymns/songs, but limited to those that are in the church's hymnal, which is the Gaither-affiliated Hymns for the Family of God. I don't know what the results have been like, but I'll see if he will cough up a list of the top favorites.

I'd love to see how similar/different that list would be. Please post it if you get it! Thanks!

Was intrigued at my first Sunday back in my home-base church after 14 months. Evening asked for favorites and 8 of the 9 were from the first 50 pages of the hymnal.

Heavy duty hymns and songs of deep devotion, not the fluff choruses or even the good praise/testimony songs of Bliss or Crosby.

45 of the 60 people present were 10-college aged. There may be hope for the next generation!

Pretty good sounding idea at that mate [IMG] I was thinking of doing it that way at previous Church, although would have gone for top 20 to get a bigger balance [IMG] It would not have been too big a job, as there were only 20 of as there ;)

At current Church (hopefully current for the next 50 years or so) I am just running amok teaching Sunday school and playing guitar for the kids. Best job in the Church, the younguns are VERY quick to say what they like and what they don't [IMG]
