Favorite Study Bibles?

I'm not a huge fan of "study" Bibles, but I do like the New Geneva Study Bible (now called the Reformation Study Bible).

 

The NASB Study Bible (NIV Study Bible notes revised for NASB text.)

 

Meat and bones when it comes to study bibles. There are some meat in most of them as well as bones. I can find something in each of them that I like, so no real preference. Harper Study Bible seems to be well balanced.

 

I use the Ryrie (<--sp) study Bible but it is the only one I have ever used so I can't really call it my fav.

 

I still like my Thompson Chain-Reference Bible, 1957 edition, combined with the NIV.

Not sure about helping on hard texts. I usually read good commentaries for that.

I would have to say that probably my favorite is the Key Word Study Bible Spiros Zodhiates has some very good notes, and it is nice to have his Lexical Aids to the Old and New Testament, as well as Strongs. It is especially good when setting at Church and you need to look up something. It also lets you know (most of the time) when there is a different Greek/Hebrew word being used right there in the text. I used this one for years, but the one I have is KJV. Someday I will get his NASB.

I use the Ryrie Study Bible now. Mine is the NIV. I use it when visiting Churches, Bible studies ect... I am starting to be more familiar with it since I switched from KJV to NIV.
I agree with most of his notes, and he has some good charts ect... He also has a small Basic Theology section in the back that is good for new believers. I find myself buying this one a lot for these reasons, when I am getting a Bible for a new convert.

Another favorite is the Scofield Bible I do agree with a lot of his notes, and still enjoy his references.

Another favorite is the The Defenders Study Bible . This is by Henry Morris. He is an exceptional thinker and has some very good notes. Especially from a good YEC perspective. Really good. Problem is, even though he is not KJVO, he is KJVP. Currently you can only get his Study Bible in KJV. If this was available in NIV this would be my choice Bible for new converts.

I find myself reading a tremendous amount of notes from the NET Bible on line. I have it on my wish list to get. I find that it is a good source for textual reasons. Plus I like a lot of things from DTS.

My wife has the Life Application Study Bible. It has been good to bring out some of the meanings from that perspective. I like it because it has over a hundred personality charts on key people in the Bible. I am hesitant to say a whole lot on it, not knowing about all the notes.

 

I only own the Ryrie study bible and unfortunatly my wife owns the exact same thing. I am trying to get a hold of MacArthur's and the NIV Study Bible and a couple of others but I keep getting outbit on ebay. I don't want anything fancy, just a paper back or anything, just something I can use. I don't care what condition. I really can't pay more then ten dollars though. Woe is me! I also bid for commentaries, but they usually have a lot of compition themselves. Lots of good WBC's and NICNT come up but usually have four or five people wanting them. I am glad for the kingdom of God that so many wish to study God's word so deeply but feel sorry for myself! I did just win Bruce's ACTS int he NICNT though

 

Anybody having a MacArthur study bible: can you comment on the quality of the binding and materials, especially for the genuine leather edition?

I am thinking of buying one, but don't want to fork out alot of money for the leather if it isn't high quality (I'll just buy the hardcover).

I have a hard time telling if a bible is good quality or not (the binding/etc). I'm sure Nelson wouldn't put out a really awful one, (which is about all I could identify).

I'll probably just opt for the Hardcover and save some $$$.

I use Nelson The New Open Bible NKJV I really like it. It is a good Study Bible. I have the Large print because the computer is ruining my eyes.
I also Have Spiros Zodhiates, Th.D The Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible. KJV I love it because even though I have the Strongs anyway, it has that, and Strongs dictionery and a concordance, and Bible atlas's.

I actually like to use both Bibles together when I am studing along with my favorite Bible dictionery ( I have many). You might see it all sprawled out everywhere. Maybe with atlas's and more reference books.

But these are my favorite. Of the two one of the two always goes with me to Church.

Just a thought Pete, and you may have already tried, but amazon.com sells used books.

 

Yeah, I know, but they are usually way more expensive then I can handle too. People have big misconceptions on what used books should cost. If a book cost fifty bucks new, I probably won't pay forty for yours with bent pages, missing dust jacket, and high lighting. Maybe I'll pay twenty but that might be pushing it.

 

You can also buy used books from Barnes and Noble. If they dont have it in there store they can locate it for you and have been known to be cheap. Other times high.
