Favorite youth curriculum

I've enjoyed Student Life curriculum for SS; we use that in our Sunday AM Bible study.

I've heard good things about Fuel, but good grief it's expensive!

Student Life is great. Also Joyful Life. We use fuel during the summer Wed. nights and Student Life all year round for Sunday School. During the most of the year on Wed. nights our youth pastor gives lessons and I think that is best.

It is good stuff, and if you go the route of ordering the quarter on CD, then you can make as many copies of whatever you want. Very inexpensive, as well. I was spending close to $100 per quarter on our curriculum, and now I am able to order one cd for just $25!!!

 

Am I typing it wrong?

Besides the price, what else do you like about it?

Fuel is great! We're currently in the second volume, and look forward to many more! We use it on Wednesday nights with the youth, instead of in Sunday School.

 

Joshua, I have a question about fuel.. Since I am moving into Full time ministry, and others will have to step up to the plate to teach. My Pastor and I have been trying to find a curriculim that is easy to use, and is relavent to today's teen.. Fuel was one of my favorites, and was high on our list until we saw this....

To us, it was too politically focused..
Treating the government like it was the enemy, and then shooting the "atheist wolf" Too me, it was too overboard.. It seemed that the message could be to shoot all atheists..

Now, what i am wondering, and asking you is this:
Is this an accurate depiction of the type of material Fuel teaches or did Lifeway just pick a bad sample to advertise Fuel?

Lifeway usually does a great job with literature, this is highly unusual to me anyway.
Or could me and my Pastor be misinterpretting it?

I am a little scared to suggest for the church to spend that kind of money on something that is that political.
Fill me in.

FUEL is designed to be a little in-your-face at times. As you've seen, there are three parts in each lesson:

"The Spark" which is an attention-getter of sorts (sometimes funny, sometimes adventurous/sports oriented, sometimes an interview with a popular Christian speaker or artist).

"Fanning the Flame" which is two young people asking the key question of the lesson.

"Combustion" which is a Christian youth communicator or artist discussing through the Scripture story (i.e. Moses and the Burning Bush).

The lessons are designed to use all or none of the DVD portions. There've been times that I have not used all three video portions of a lesson because I didn't like the tone or the way the information was presented. I've found that this way the youth are never bored, because we don't do FUEL the same way every week. I tell them all the time that we serve in a "Rut-Resistant Zone!"

I would say if in studying the lesson each particular week, if you take exception to the way things are done, don't use that portion. With my group, the video is often more helpful than not. In all actuality, LifeWay's attempt to give a sample is difficult, because the tone and direction of each lesson is so different. Hope this helps. If I can help further, let me know.

I believe the church is going to try Fuel for the Middle Schoolers and Nooma for the High Schoolers.. has anyone tried Nooma before?

 

I use nooma from time to time. Good for High-schoolers...too deep for most JH students, IMO.

For most "big event" stuff, I write much of our curriculum. (D'now, retreats, etc.) unless I find something that hits a home run across the board:
-Theologically sound
-Very applicable
-Teachable in many formats
-Interesting to students
-Affordable (that rules out quite a bit sometimes!)

Anyhoo, student life Bible study for Sunday School here. I've used lots of other materials in other settings.

 

Yeah, i agree with you about nooma for HS.
We used it for ministers camp last year. That was the first time I had seen it..

I am starting a thread on it, here in the youth forum.. if you would like to discuss it.

 

Try looking at inquest material. I like it. It is good stuff!!!!
