Had FDR not died, do you think he would been elected to a 5th term in 1948?

I don't think FDR would have run for a 5th term. But it's sheer speculation.

No, he was too ill to consider running again. I believe his illness was a major factor in his blunders at Yalta.

Is the British experience with Churchill an indicator? They threw him out of office after the war. Would the people have felt that Roosevelt had finished his task and was becoming an uncrowned king?

Yes, Churchill was thrown out of office at the end of the war, but you must understand that we had had enough of war and Churchill had been proposing that we push on beyond Germany and take out the true enemy, Russia.

Churchill was not very popular, especially in London. Having said that, he was the BEST man for the time. That time had finally come to a conclusion and we wanted to recover some sense of living in England. Remember, Churchill was re-elected a few years later for another term in Parliament.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Very interesting words. There is truth in the notion that being the best person at the time isn't necessarily being the most popular person at the time. This is likely true of more people that we care to acknowlege.
