How did you find the book lucid? Was this your first thought when you read the book?

    Is it worth the money?

Has the author interviewed Rick Warren?

methinks many will find it "lucid" because it supports their own pre-judged conclusions...ya know, "worldly music", and hawaiian shirts...God can't use that, can He?

Don't you believe they are put on the road...and don't really "find" it in the first place? Of course your view will be skewed.

Whats really fun is to be scripturally discerning about what we teach, what we read, what we believe and take into our heart and mind and to point the way for those who are easily vulnerable to erroneous doctrines! All sin, make mistakes but we must not allow ourself to dwell in sin without confronting, repenting, restoring and knowing what is biblical in the way of worship and life! Its a matter of searching and knowing what scripture says, not public opinion or popularity!

My thoughts are that you should read the book before claiming it to be a "lucid response."

    My opinion doesn't matter.

Refresh my memory... what verses is it that say a minister must wear a coat and tie, and that all music used in church must be Southern Gospel hymns...?

    I can't seem to recall...

and just looking at the title, are you saying we have no purpose in life even with Christ, or that Christ doesn't have a plan for us on earth?

Thanks for your posts. They have been quite revealing. In my OP I clearly stated I had not read the book. I had read reviews of the book. I wanted to see if anyone here had read it and what their thoughts on it were. Simple request?

In return I received sarcasm, which is rampant on this forum, along with rude responses. No one simply answered my question but with all of your assumptions about me you had your minds made up and lashed out in turn. I regret asking the question. I have no opinion personally on the book, but took what I'd said from reviews other fellow baptists had written.

Are you pastors? Do you counsel others?
    Lord, grant mercy!

I'm confused by some of the replies to your original post as well. I have not read the book. I do have problems with some of the things in the Purpose Driven Life book. I have more problems with the Purpose Driven Church though and even more problems with some of the things Rick Warren has said in public.

Looks like another me-too author trying to cash in by degrading someone elses successes. Are there things that Rick Warren could improve? Yes. Do we really need another book degrading him every couple of months? No.

Many Christians I see have a lack of discernment because there is a lack of teaching it in the churches. That is why things like open theism, active homosexual pastors, evolution, pragmatism, belief there are errors in the Bible and ideas that come from things like the new age have been creeping into the church. If you read the N.T. Jesus and the apostles were quick to correct bad doctrine and ideas in the church. The same goes on for the years right after the Bible was complete. The key is to always correct in love and for the right reasons.

I have problems with the majority of congregations because they will not get out of the house and meet people. Instead they try to go for the lazy solution of a program when Jesus gave the command to make disciples. Making disciples is not a Sunday SYI (Share Your Ignorance) program but a real investment in the lives of others we love. It is helping them on the road to obedience to Jesus and being able to survive with Christ.

I have had many pastors over the years ask me why the church I was pastoring was growing. When I told them, often the response was that they did not have time or the people would not do it. There are many excuses and one solution to the problem.

Churches in America have been on the decline since about the 1950s. It is not because of Warren or some guru. Dawson Trotman saw the problem in the early 50s and late 40s when he spoke in the 50s about it. A record of the sermons he gave on it are at http://www.bibleteacher.org/Dm118_8.htm

What caught my interest was the reviews that stated it was done with respect, balance and well researched and documented.
The author declares it not to be an attack on PDL or Rick Warren but does expose the problems inherent in the entertainment trend of 'worship' services. Actually I found that of interest, however I have no time to put the time required into reading the book.
I do strongly oppose the trend of much entertainment, minimal or no scriptural teaching so prevalent today!
Just today, unable to attend church I searched for a pastor on TV. Horrors! One mega church pastor was 'preaching' on weight loss and how to reach your goal, another was 'preaching' on how to apply your oxygen mask when needed in flight!
There is a famine of the Word of God in our country today! I so hope to be back in my church next Sunday where my pastor preaches an expository sermon twice Sunday, once Wednesday! Some people are actually hungry for such!

Agreed. We all need a good grasp of what the Gospel is and then we need to go out and make disciples as Jesus commanded!

This is also one of the largest churches in America! I saw that sermon also and I couldn't figure out if this was suppose to be a sermon or an infomercial for some new diet plan. I suppose when you tell people you don't want to preach on things such as hell and sin you have to figure something else to preach on.
