I simply don't understand why they didn't do this months ago. It would have diffused all this nonsense.

That said, I'm glad they have produced it and hopefully it will remove yet another pointless issue from the grand narrative. Perhaps it will be replaced with something meaningful, like how to prepare our children for a world where the US is no longer the dominant economic/political power.

Of course if someone where to create a time machine and transport some of these birthers back to the room, the day, and the moment of the President's birth it wouldn't be enough...

I basically agree, but understand his stand. Why should he have to show the entire nation his birth certificate when no other president ever has? This whole thing was wacky - it was 'made up' as the president just said in the press conference.

This took some courage - he is losing a political advantage by shutting up the wackies and allowing his opponents to focus on his very real problems.

Somehow I think that even THIS won't be enough.

Actually, it won't. I just sent that link to several people I know that are birthers and I've already received word back from them that it is a fake birth certificate.

Obama might have higher principles than the typical republican. Maybe he was rebelling against the police state attitude. He knew he was a citizen.

Roger - it didn't take that much away from what Obama was doing, and it didn't provide any leverage whatsoever for his political opponents.

If anything, it's strengthened his position, and put his political detractors into a tenuous position--because now they can be accused of focusing on silly things for the past year or two, instead of focusing on the economy, and things like that.

He could have done this at any time with a 5-minute (or less) phone call.

I'm satisfied. Those that want to claim it's a fake will have to join the ranks of the "Grassy Knollers."

McCain showed his withing 48 hours of announcing his candidacy.

But McCain was not born in the US. Obama was.

But, there were legitimate questions concerning that considering those in other countries were claiming differently. This all could have been over within 48 hours if Obama was not wanting to play political games.

Nobody for the "other country" claimed Obama was born anywhere but Hawaii. That is a lie perpetuated by birthers. Obama's grandmother was asked where Barack Obama was born and she said "Kenya" speaking of her son Barack Obama SENIOR. When asked about Junior she plainly said, "Hawaii."

Is this the form that the Governor of Hawaii and the Secretary of Health & Human Services of Hawaii said could not be found?

Where did they find it?

With the Rose Law Firm billing records?

Did it just suddenly show up on a kitchen table in the White House unexpectedly?

Apparently it was the same on Obama spent a lot of money on attorneys to not have to show.
