    Does the pastoral staff vote as members of the finance committee?

    I am interested in the diversity of church finance committees and the influence of pastors and other staffers.

    Our pastor is a valued ex officio member of our finance committe. We rely on him greatly, and he probably has one of the best financial minds that I have ever run across (church or secular) That said, our constitution does not allow him to vote in the finance committee. I cannot think of a time however that the finance commitee "went against him"

    I acknowledge the pastor can and should provide guidance and insight into the direction of the church. What I am concerned about is undue influence. Sometimes, something is the right thing to do but not the right time to do it.

    My pastor is not gifted in any financial areas. For example, he borrowed money to invest in a "sure thing." Needless to say, he lost out. That is what I am mainly concerned about. There are folks who have no idea about stewardship that are controlling the finances in some churches.

    To the best of my understanding of the matter, the pastor is an ex officio member of all "commitees" in his church. It comes with being the "bishop". However, that's not to say he "runs" all of the commitees. In my home church, we have three CPAs and a stock broker. One of our assistant pastors was a business manager for a large law firm. Suffice to say, they and others do a lot of the heavy lifting in our budget and finance group.

    We just finished the finance/budgeting process. None of us voted, although all of us gave input during our meetings. (We've got 11 ministers on staff so it took quite a long time.)

    I believe that pastoral staff should not have vote on this or any committee. They are ex officio and should be used for advice and imput. That is why we need to develop godly men in our churches who can provide both spiritual and practical counsel for decision making. [​IMG]
