First time this has happened to me in thirty five years of preaching...

On Sunday my exposition of the Book of Acts came to the story of Stephen. I preached that like Stephen, there are times that Christians will face hardship and persecution and in fact one should expect it.

After the service a woman came up to me and asked to speak with me. Of course I said yes. We went off to the side and she said that sermon was depressing and that I should start preaching victory and prosperity like Joel Osteen. She was very serious.

I told her I would pray for her and that she was wrong to expect life would always be easy. She said that I was just wrong in my outlook.

We live in interesting times.....

I wonder if she had considered the Methodist Church ... I bet they don't preach about Stephen and hardship. ;)

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
2Ti 4:4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Well, the good news is she spoke to you in private. Hopefully, that will satisfy her need to make her mind known

Peace to you

Well. Joel Osteen must be right. Look at all those people in his church!
It's just that Jesus who is so negative: 'In the world you will have tribulation....' Who wants to hear that? This lady obviously wants less of Him and more of Osteen.

Should have told her that next Sunday you planned to preach on the suffering Paul endured.
(It's a shame Paul did not know Joel's teachings. If he did, he could have avoided all that) Sarcasm intended!

I knew a pastor who told me his deacons complained in a business meeting, “Bible, Bible, Bible… all you do is talk about the Bible!!”

I told him what a great testimony that was.

Peace to you

the story of Stephen

.....they shall lay their hands on you, and shall persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name`s sake. It shall turn out unto you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand how to answer: for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay. Lk 21:12-15

But there arose certain of them that were of the synagogue called the synagogue of the Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake. Acts 6:9-10
