    Not that it necessarily matters, but by the time Beethoven (1770-1827) gave the world premiere of Symphony #9 (May 7, 1824), he was so deaf that as he sat on his chair to conduct his Ode to Joy (his title for Sym #9), an assistant had to stand behind him to actually conduct the orchestra.

    Then, when it was over, that same assistant had to help him out of his seat so that he could face the audience to receive the thunderous applause from the enraptured crowd.
