Floppy Drive

    May be simple but not sure. I've been tinkering with the puter' I got last week & somehow the floppy quit working. The green light is on constantly & won't read. Everything shows fine in Device Mngr., & I'm pretty sure it's ok in bios. But it don't work. Reboot does nothing, the light stays on like there's a disk in it already. Any ideas??

    Find a local computer store that buys used computers and buy a replacement from their parts bargain bin! Assuming it's the drive that's bad that should be a cheap and easy fix. You should be able to find one for $5-$10.

    You can find new ones online for not much more.

    I'd unplug the strip cable and plug it back in on both ends, while it is unplugged look and be sure the pins aren't bent.

    You might also take some canned air or blow as hard as you can into the slot (holding the door open :) just in case some lint is holding something up.

    Also, if you have antivirus software, be sure it isn't trying to scan a disk it thinks is there.

    Thanks Folks, actually I forgot I've got an extra one if needed...duh!
    EX..I'll try the first two, still trying to figure how to transplant my anti-virus to her puter without having to get on line to update it. Ought to be some way to transfer the file containing the definitions from mine to hers.
    Yeah..just noticed the part bout blowin hard...Agee says I'm a blowhard anyway!!

    Are you sure you didn't get one end of the floppy drive cable turned around the wrong way? If you plug one cable end in backwards on floppy drives, it usually doesn't fry anything, but the floppy drive light stays on all the time and the drive won't work.

    It's easy to do, since the connectors aren't "keyed" to prevent you from plugging it in backwards.

    Yep Fellas...Right again, & don't it figure bout the time I get her's fixed mine crashes!! I installed the second HD (2.2Gb) into mine to install Linux on to play with,...well it played with me instead. First bootup everything was fine, 2nd boot...nothing. Had to unplug the small drive & then reinstall 2000 on the larger one to get it to boot. I know curiosity killed the cat...but not computers!!! Ah,..didn't like it anyway. Know anyone that wants 5 free copies of Nubantu Linux???
