Seen the new Time/Life music offer? Seen the responses of the hippies and yippies to the music? This is the substance of contemporary worship. there's nothing spiritual about it.

I googled "Time Life Flower Power" and clicked on it. Then clicked on the praise and worship CD offered there, and looked at the artists and songs on it. Is that what you are talking about?

If so, I disagree with your opinion. Those praise and worship songs on there have great substance, both musically and lyrically. The artists as well.

I cant find the link to the responses of the old hippies. (of which I am one!) :wavey:

    God bless,

    Mike

It seems like you are being intentionally misleading...

The flower power CD has nothing to do with Christianity... It is songs from the hippy era...

Time life sells, old music, classical, rock, country, AND Christian music....

What are you trying to say...

They are not even marketing the flower power music to Christians... but to those that grew up in the 60s and 70s...

    Tint Tim,

    You said to Aaron,

I dont think he means that one. I think he means the praise and worship CD on the same page. That one looks really good to me. Some excellant songs and artists.

    Its right here...

My apologies if that is what you mean, and you are not being misleading Aaron...
    But....

That CD has nothing to do with their flower power series....
That would be like condemning a Bible sold at walmart because they sell beer there too...

You said in the OP: "Seen the responses of the hippies and yippies to the music?"

No I don't see any hippy responses to the worship CD....
Please be kind enough to show us these responses...

I should have said, "Seen the Flower Power adds on TV?" I'm not talking about the website. Tiny asked for a link for pete's sake.

In many of the shots in the add, there is no difference between the responses of the hippies to rock music and what is being confused with worship in the churches today.

BTW, anyone else notice how quick the CCM camp resorted to accusations of dishonesty?

    Oh. OK, now I understand.

I havent seen the commercial so I cant comment on that.

But regarding the terminology, 2 people can say the same thing but mean something different. Back in my smoking reefer days I might say that some particulary "good" music "blew me away" and it would mean one thing.

But if I were to say today that some praise and worship music "blows me away" I would mean that it was annointed and the music and message really blessed me.

    I am asking for honesty...

You make a claim, and refuse to back it up...
    Tell us what was said...
Unless you do, you are guilty of starting threads, without substance, to acquire a certain response that causes division among us. This is called trolling.

Since some of us don't have time to set around watching for certain TV commercials that advertise music from the 60s... Just give us some quotes so we can evaluate them...

Or at least the gist of the quotes...

I went to the link and also got a response for CD's for sale, so I don't know what you are refering to. Could this thread be about how far secular music has gone in our churches? If so, I've got a story for you!:
When I was a child, my parents and I attended an Easter celebration at a church we've never been to before. All was going well and good, until a quitar duet took the stage. They sang "Leaving On a Jet Plane" (John Denver).

I'm leeaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again...
Oh, Babe, I hate to goooo..."
(plus some line about "you'll wear my wedding ring.")

I remember being entertainted by this as a child. My parents, needless to say, were not amused, and we never went back.

I've also heard Cat Steven's songs, especially "Morning Has Broken" sung in some different churches. Now, I like the song, but is it really suitable? I don't know. It's a grey area, given the history of the song, and the author himself.
I've heard a lot of country/western praise songs. Seems a little off to me, but people respond to it.

    Love,

    Sopranette (nursing a cold)

I think Aaron has proven before what his motives entail, based on his previous posts.

He is the self-appointed judge as to what is worshipful and what is not.

That's not a job I would want...but hey, if he can wrestle the job away from God, then have at it.

Have I misunderstood you, Sopranette, or do you think "Morning Has Broken" was actually written by Cat Stevens?

The words are in fact by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965), a British poet and story-writer. The tune - the same one Cat Stevens used - is an old Gaelic melody. So the author was a "her" not a "him".

Hope your cold soon gets better!

    Thank you, Brother Lamb!
Yes, I know the history of "Morning Has Broken", that Cat Stevens was a spiritual seeker for much of his life, finally becoming a Muslim and leaving the music industry to become a peace activist. Interestingly, too, his mother was a Baptist. The song itself is a combination of many different things, taking bits of psalms and set to the tune of an old Scottish christmas hymn, but it's best known as a folk song. I like the song, but it still makes me cock my head whenever I hear it in church. I have doubts about whether it should be played in this setting.

    Love,

    Sopranette

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I have ever sung it in a church service since my conversion, but it is included in several hymn books over here, and I remember it was one we used to sing at infant school (I think that's roughly the equivalent of the first two years of the US "Elementary School). When you wrote, "I have doubts about whether it should be played in this setting," (emphasis mine) I wonder if you mean the playing of the Cat Stevens recording? If so, I completely misunderstood your earlier post.

As far as hymns for singing are concerned, I think there are several with far better words that can be used for thanking God for the new day.

Incidentally, I wonder if the old Scottish Christmas hymn you had in mind was the one translated into English as "Child in a Manger, Infant of Mary"? We do sing that one sometimes, to the "traditional Gaelic melody" it shares with "Morning has Broken".

Yes, I've heard both songs are very similar. Can't say for sure, since I haven't heard them for myself. I have heard "Morning Has Broken" both played on piano, and sung, too, although rarely.
