Heard an interesting idea Sunday morning at church, from guest pastor Dr. Jimmy Draper: Instead of coming to church to worship, we should come worshiping to church. I took this to mean that his definition of corporate worship is all of us bringing our personal worship together here at our church. But this also implies that personal worship is happening apart from church on Sunday. Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm just putting this out there.

    Joshua,

Quit giving us these thoughts. You're messing up the way "we've always done it."

    Good words.

Bang on, mate. We cannot turn on and off the state of worship....which means adoration and devotion....like we open and close the fawcett. It ought to be a constant state. Yet, we must not be so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good.

Every avenue within the church service is but an instrument lighting our path to God.

    Cheers,

    Jim

If we are consistent, then we should believe that worship happens no matter where we are or when it is. Of course, we must also understand that worship is far more than the musical expression. (Which is why so many of us say, "come to church to worship.") Looks like we need to do a better job of communicating what worship really is to our congregants!

I'l agree with you, Scott. Too many times in my life I was guilty of believing the the music was the worship. The music is just one tool used in worship. Some of the most worshipful times I've ever had with the Lord were me, in a private place, with my Bible open, reading, praying, reading, praying, reading, praying... with no music involved.

Recently, through the still birth of our daughter, God has proven Himself to be even more amazing then I was giving him credit. He has forgiven me, and I have much more to be thankful for, grateful for, and praising Him for.

Joshua, I agree with his statement completely. It is sad that so many in our churches today miss this concept.

I will throw in a quote that I will always come back to when I think of this topic.

Dr. Don Whitney says in Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life "How is it possible to worship God publicly once each week when we do not worship Him privately throughout the week? Can we expect the flames of our worship of God to burn brightly in public on the Lord's Day when they barely flicker for Him in secret on other days?" (pg. 93)

John Wesley on John 4:23 "The true worshippers shall worship the Father - Not here or there only, but at all times and in all places." :)

Funny you should mention that, because I am also going to use these great resources this Sunday.

heh....looks like it's contagious. I've been asked to preach at one of old Churches in a month or two.... (just goes to show how bad the situation is in Oz huh? ;)) ....Topic will very likely be worship. Congregation better wear steel-capped boots that day 'cause I'll probably step on a toe or two ;)

Just skimmed it, but very good, Pete.

Also, check out the book "The Air I Breathe" by Louie Giglio. It's great.

I have always taught and believe that we should be in an attitude of worship when we approach the House of God. If this happens, then the church collectively can truly worship ( to show ones worth). When we look within the scriptures most often, not always, we see the posture of worship, which is bowing before the Lord, an act of submission and total dependence to the one who is worthy of it. I believe that there is an attitude of worshp as well as a position of worship.
If you look in Ezra chapter 8 and 9, the people did not worship until the Book of the Law was read and there was a spirit of repentence from their sins as well. Point being, those who are of a pure heart in regards to confession and forsaking of sin, God calls to worship. He indeed in truly worthy.
