Forget about drums in the Church...

Just grab your saxophone, horn or accordian and start playing.

 

One song our Sunday band does, "Humble King," has an accordion part to it.

We need to be careful with our choices of music in church...

I was told this Sunday by one of our older ladies that they were taught that the Bible says that only stringed instruments were to be used in church...

She is searching for the scripture now to show me....

I find it funny people who fuss about no drums in church will sing to a track
WITH DRUMS!

 

Check some of the major publishers. There are books for B-flat (tenor sax, clarinet, trumpet), E-flat (alto sax) and F (horn) instruments.

Accordion? Weeeellll, I don't know. I'm sure there is some available somewhere.

You could also call a music supplier like Pine Lke Music in GA , Kempke's Music in FL or J & J music.

 

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying that you can't find hymn-tunes with parts written for so-called "transposing instruments" (like most clarinets, saxophones, (French) horns, and so on) for which the music needs to be written higher or lower than it will actually sound, or for instruments like the accordion, which use special notation? Or are you saying that composers of hymn tunes don't write with the instruments you mention in mind?

 

I went to a music conference one year. Someone announced from the podium that some churches will not allow the saxaphone in the church because of the sensual style it could be played.

I played the sax (NO BILL CLINTON JOKES EITHER)raying: . I also play the piano and the instruments itself is not wrong. It is how you play it.

I played an Anthony Burger arrangement of "Goodbye World Goodbye" one Sunday evening and someone said that "I like that HONKY TONK." He later apologized for saying that, but I told my wife that I would never play that song in church again because I don't want it to sound like I am "showing off", but to think about the glorious time we will have in Heaven.

 

Forget the drums? I rather like the concussion section.

 

I fully agree. Most instruments can be played in a sensual way. Most can be played in a "showing off" way. But they can be played sensitively too.

I agree with you and Pocadots1990 regarding the piano & sax, and drums can be played sensitively also. I've been playing conga drums and other hand drums as a church musician for 30 + years.
