Obviously we don’t know a lot about any of the circumstances involving this incident.
I’d guess that blood was drawn immediately upon arrival to a busy ER, the cyclist would have arrived in the trauma room and declared dead upon arrival.
The physician, writing up the death certificate later and working with what little information he had, noted a positive Covid-19 result and would have listed it among other possible contributing causes.
Natural deaths are due almost entirely to disease processes or aging. In the case of a death due to a COVID–19 infection, the manner of death would have been listed as natural.
In this case, even though the virus’ presence was noted, the cause of death would have been accidental.
This is where the err probably occurred in categorizing the Covid death. Someone saw Covid and quickly came to a wrong conclusion.
The article did not indicate that the death certificate was altered afterwords.
I’m guessing that it was a simple clerical err by under educated secretarial staff.
