Was there a time, long ago, when France occupied Germany ? I'm doing a little research on the Brothers Grimm tales, and would like a little background of life in Germany during those times. Several searches only get me WWII info.

Anybody got a good link ?

The period you're interested in is the Napoleonic Wars, when France occupied the Rhineland, incorporating the western portion into France and making the eastern portion into puppet states, and defeating all the German states in battle.

They also occupied parts of the Rhineland (along with the Brits) after WWI up until 1930 (shame we didn't stay on there - might have saved a lot of bother) along with parts of the Ruhr with the Belgians (yes, the Belgians!) in 1922-3...but that's about 100 years after the Grimms; the main period is c.1795 (when the French Revolutionary Army occupied the Rhineland) until 1813 (when Napoleon was finally kicked out of the German Confederation's territory after the Battle of Leipzig), with the French annexing all of North Germany in the meantime and occupying the rest up to and including the Grand Duchy of Warsaw (from which they invaded Russia in 1812)

I was stationed with the US Army at Zweibruecken, Germany. The direct translation is "Two Bridges" When the city was under French control it was known as Deux-ponts.(two bridges)
Here is a web site about the City of two bridges: http://www.dlr.rlp.de/internet/Dienststellen/zweibruecken/web_dienst.nsf/c73c4acde2321ed6c1256aa100502376/8694272a1dbd2e86c1256b57005cb777?OpenDocument
