EWF's Pub Night Fellowship thread got me wondering. How many of you belong to fraternal organizations that may serve alcohol. Do you have any meaningful spirital discussions there? Are many of the members churchgoers? Do you feel it would be a hinderance to your witness? Any comments are welcome.

I was in a fraternity in college -- no surprise, alcohol was served at parties.

I, too, was in a fraternity in college. Sigma Alpha Epsilon. No alcohol.

That's because it was a Baptist school--Union University, Jackson, Tennessee. UU had two sanctioned fraternities and two sororities. Alcohol was strictly prohibited at fraternity social functions, and none was allowed in the fraternity house.

Obviously we were an anomaly.

Eph. 5:18 says "Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit."

I take that to mean that alcohol can be used as long as we refrain from becoming drunk. I've personally known a LOT of people (mostly men and mostly family) who were seldom, if ever, sober. Drunks are generally very obnoxious. On rare occasions, a person (like my dad) will actually become a lot kinder with alcohol. My mother, who was a sweet and kind person when sober, became angry and impossible to deal with when she and my dad drank on Friday night. They both became the opposite of what they were like when sober.

Of course, our Christian testimony is very important, and we have to be careful how the world sees us and whether or not they will believe our testimony. If they see us staggering around, with slurred speech and being obnoxious from alcohol, trying to tell them about Christ will fall on deaf ears.
