The deal is worth millions of Euros according to Mandrakesoft co-founder Gael Duval, who added that the ministry's biggest savings will come from no longer paying Windows licensing fees.

The migration began in November, managed by the ministry's central administration for IT. The ministry has 100,000 agents located throughout the country, providing central and local administration to its 160 remote offices, as well as technical and navigation services. More than 60,000 workstations and 2,000 NT servers will be replaced.

Linux does seem to be getting more popular, all I have heard is good things about it. Especially if it saves Christian Missions money and is more resistant to virus attack.

There are linux based viruses, but they are few in number (one is called BLISS and it's a UNIX trojan horse - so it could affect Solaris as well). http://math-www.uni-paderborn.de/~axel/bliss/

It's not because of the complexity of making such viruses; it's just that most people on Linux boxes are more security conscious and it's also the efforts of a lot of people who dislike Microsoft.

Linux has it's holes, too. http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopics/security/story/0,10801,94043,00.html

However, if Linux has holes, it's somewhat like three rounds from a .22 fired into a mobile home. XP is often compared to Swiss cheese.
