From where the Antichrist will come

The Bible says from where the Antichrist will come.

In the Old Testament, the prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel and Daniel provided a great deal of information about the End Time World Leader called the Antichrist. When we put this together with what is revealed in the New Testament we know from where the Antichrist will come.

The Old Testament prophet Daniel received a prophecy from God revealing that the Antichrist will confirm a treaty guaranteeing Israel’s security. Then, after 3 ½ years of peace, the Antichrist will set himself up in the Jewish Temple and proclaim that he is God. This abomination will initiate the Great Tribulation which will last 3 ½ years. At the end of the Great Tribulation, Christ will return, defeat the Antichrist and establish the Kingdom of God on earth. Daniel’s prophecy tells us that the Antichrist will be Israel’s protector before he attempts to eliminate everyone who refuses to worship him and receive his mark.

Daniel referred to the Antichrist as the leader who will come, the little horn, the beast and the stern faced king. In Daniel 11, he also referred to the Antichrist as the king of the North. The king of the North is an indication of where the Antichrist comes from. The land of the North is what the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah called the territory of the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires. The Assyrian Empire was conquered by the Babylonians in 626 B.C. Both the Assyrian capital of Asshur and the Babylonian capital of Babylon were located in present day Iraq, see map below. These two empires were essentially comprised of the same territories which included present day Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel also wrote of the Antichrist. In Ezekiel 38 and 39 he prophesied about the Antichrist’s two campaigns against Israel. Interwoven in this prophecy are details about the Antichrist and his armies come against Israel at the beginning of the Great Tribulation. This prophecy also tells of the Antichrist and his armies coming against Jerusalem at the end of the age. Ezekiel refers to the Antichrist as Gog, the chief prince, from the land of Magog. The ancient land of Magog included some of the territory represented by present day Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbajan, and Russia near the Black Sea.

The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote extensively of the Antichrist. In several of Isaiah’s prophecies about the Antichrist, Isaiah referred to him as the Assyrian and the king of Assyria. One of Isaiah’s prophecies tells how Israel will at first rely on the Assyrian but then he will beat Israel with the club of God’s wrath until they turn to the Holy One of Israel. This description depicts the time of the end when the Antichrist will be Israel’s protector until he attempts to wipe them out in the Great Tribulation. Isaiah’s prophecy goes on to say that a remnant of Israel will turn to God and be saved from the Antichrist. When Isaiah refers to the Antichrist as the Assyrian, he is indicating from where the Antichrist will come. Ancient Assyria included territories represented by present day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran.

In the New Testament, Jesus, the Apostle John and the Apostle Paul spoke about the Antichrist. Jesus called the Antichrist the abomination that causes desolation, in Matthew 24:15. The Apostle Paul called the Antichrist the man of lawlessness and the lawless one in 2 Thessalonians 2. However, neither Jesus nor Paul indicated from where the Antichrist would come.

John revealed information regarding the Antichrist’s place of origin. In Revelation 13, John said that the Antichrist and his kingdom would be like a lion, a leopard and a bear. These are the same likenesses Daniel used for the Babylonian, Media-Persian and Greek Empires, in Daniel 7. Therefore, like the Old Testament prophets, John indicates that the Antichrist will come from a territory of present day Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq or Iran.

The Bible again and again indicates that the Antichrist will come from the Middle East.

With biblical prophecy consistently pointing to the Middle East as the origin of the Antichrist, why do some people believe that the Antichrist will come from a revived Roman Empire like the European Common Market? This misunderstanding is from a sentence in Daniel 9:26 which says, “The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.”

First, we need to understand that biblical prophecies often include events or things which occur at different times. Sometimes these prophetic time differences can even be written into the same sentence. For example, Isaiah wrote this about Jesus Christ, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6). Notice, in this familiar prophecy, that Christ’s birth and Christ’s Government are written in the same sentence. Christ’s birth is believed to have occurred almost 2,000 years ago in 4 B.C. and we are still waiting for His government (Kingdom) to come on earth.

The subject of the sentence in question is the people.

The people will be of the same people as the ruler in question. This means the people and the ruler will be of the same national origin. If the people are Greek then the leader in question will be Greek. Therefore, when we know the national origin of the people we will also know the national origin of the leader.

Part of this prophecy was fulfilled in 70 A.D. when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem and the Jewish sanctuary. According to the historian Josephus, the people that destroyed the sanctuary were predominately Syrian.

Some people have incorrectly assumed that, because it was a Roman army, the people who destroyed the city and the sanctuary were of Roman nationality. However, in those days it was customary for the Roman army to conscript soldiers from territories they had conquered. In this campaign the Roman army was comprised predominately of Syrians.

Therefore, the ruler who will come will be of Syrian national origin. Syria, at that time, included some of the territory of present day Turkey, Syria and Lebanon.

“The ruler who will come” is the Antichrist. That the Antichrist is the leader who will come is confirmed in Daniel 9:27. Daniel identifies the leader who will come this way. “He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

As seen in previously mentioned prophecies, this prophecy also indicates that the Antichrist will come from the Middle East.

When Jesus warned His followers about the things that would lead up to the end of the age and His return, He commanded them to “keep watch!”

Now, we know where to watch.

Antichrist from where?

Marcia asked about Isaiah and the Antichrist.

Isaiah writes a great deal of the Antichrist in Isaiah chapter 10 and a little in chapter 14. We can tell who Isaiah is referring to by the final circumstances of these prophecies, plus these also line up with what we know from Daniel.

Marcia, I find the activities of the Antichrist woven into Isaiah's prophecy from verse 10:5 to 10:28.

Keeping in mind that the Antichrist is the final world leader and he at first is Israel's protector when he confirms a covenant for their security, Daniel 9:27. After 3 1/2 years the Antichrist will start the Great Tribulation and begin to beat Israel with the club of God's wrath because of Israel's unbelief until the remnant of Israel ultimately turns and recognizes the Christ at His coming.

Also in Isaiah 14:24-27 "determined for the whole world" and "I will crush the Assyrian in my land on my mountians"
